"Swim classes"

Just wondering if anyone has done swim classes with their child. What were the exercises they had you do with your child? We belong to a pool and go a couple times a week and I wanted to do some "homeschool swim lessons" lol. DS loves the water so I just want to keep the process (if there is one) going.

  • We just finished swimming lessons a couple of weeks ago. They had us try to show them how blow bubbles, we helped them float them on their front and back. We did submersions. On the side of the pool they would get us to help them jump in from standing. We would get them to sit on the side of the pool and get them to lean forward to go into the pool. We would also get them to push off the wall with their feet and you would help them glide in their back.

Overall, it was a lot of fun. We did a lot of songs and games. DD had a blast. I would go again.

  • We have. Mostly getting used to splashing, kicking, blowing bubbles, floating on her back and dunking my blowing in her face and dunking her sideways through the water. It was good for her, helped her get more used to the water.

  • Both of us work full time and so we haven't committed to actual swim lessons yet. We go to the pool, and do the same principles that they do in toddler swim lessons. I probably won't start him in actual swim lessons until summer of 2016. But we will get a lot of pool time before then so I'm not too worried about it.

We have our DD in classes since she was 6 months.  My father-in-law has a in ground pool so we were adamant on putting her in classes just in case.  The basically teach them what the provious people stated.  It was a great piece of mind on our end and she absolutely loves the water!

  • We have taken two swim lessons. It's hard to stick with a specific day with working full time. However, when we have taken the open swim classes I feel like DS gets alot out of them. I don't expect him to be swimming on his own yet at this age. But I want him to be comfortable with the water. I didn't take lessons until I was nine and was terrified. I don't want him to be like that.

In class they teach them how to paddle with thier hands, kick with their feet, blow bubbles and float on their backs. They use alot of songs for it all. Something else they also do to motivate them to want to move is put a ball that will float in the water so that the LO's have to "swim" to get it. Never would have thought of that, but when we are out in a pool this summer, I might try to mimic that.

Some of the songs were regular songs changed for the pool. Like "of you're happy and you know it". Instead of clap your hands it would be blow some bubbles or kick your feet and stuff like that.
