Babysitter interview

Up until now I've been fortunate to always have a close friend or family member care for M when I can't. But as she gets a little older I'm feeling more and more like MH and I need to get a few evenings to ourselves and I don't want to always have to ask my mom to babysit. I'm meeting up with a couple of young girls (15 yrs old) on Friday, so that Madeline can meet them and I can get to know a bit about them and see how I feel about the whole situation. For those of you who have/do use teenagers to babysit, what are some of the questions you ask them ahead of time? I feeling nervous, and when I'm nervous I forget/miss things. Tia, :)

Re: Babysitter interview

  • Oh, and also... What do you pay your teenage sitters? I'm assuming this will vary by region, but still curious.

  • $10 an hour for a 15 year old founds fair. $10-15 for someone older. It also depends on of your LO is going to be awake the whole time. Will the babysitter be doing light housework? Ask them if they have training. I.e. Babysitting course or CPR. Who else they sit for. What they like about kids. Games they like to play. References.

  • Thanks you guys! @elmoali - I totally agree! The two girls I'm meeting have been advertising their little babysitting business for the summer. That was the first thing I noticed on their Facebook ad, interested in the kids not our cell phones. Obviously we'll have to ensure that really happens, but it made me feel better knowing that they are aware that parents find this to be an issue with young sitters. They both have their babysitting certificate. So I'm really hoping that I get a good feeling when I meet them and see how they interact with M.

  • The both sound like they take the job seriously.  I always babysat and know that a young person can be a great babysitter and that for the most part, sitters who are going out of their way to advertise and seek out jobs really WANT to do it.

  • Thanks @elmoali‌, that's what I thought too. They seem really eager so I think it will be great!
