Oh good something else to worry about

Question..:someone on here today mentioned leaking amniotic fluid. I'm paranoid about this now. The past 2-3 days I've had what I thought was increased discharge but is much thinner.

How can you tell if it's amniotic fluid or just regular increased discharge? My appt is next Monday but wondering if I should be more concerned.

Re: Oh good something else to worry about

  • I believe the best way the thread said to tell was if it smelled sweet... you should be able to find the thread if you search for amniotic fluid.

  • This has been happening to me but I was just at the doctor and everything was fine.

  • I honestly can't tell by that.

Mayo clinic says if it's amniotic fluid it would totally saturate your underwear so hopefully that's true.

Did they do anything to check?
  • @JamieK1882‌ they did a cervical length measurement with the trans-v probe and a whole a/s, everything looked great

  • I wouldn't worry. It's pretty typical and will probably continue to increase as you get further along. I was so worried about this my last pregnancy. The day I had my twins I had a LOT more fluid than normal and was freaked that's what it was. Good news was it was only cervical fluid!!!! The not so good news was it was because I was dilated 5cm and that's why I was having more fluid.

  • You can tell by smelling your panties. Sorry!
  • It's most likely just discharge.
  • Here's some info for you:

First, Smell the fluid. Does it smell like urine? If it smells like urine, it probably is urine. Bladder control issues are not uncommon in pregnancy. If it smells like bleach, it is more likely to be amniotic fluid.
Amniotic fluid is usually clear to pale straw colored (lighter than urine)

I leaked with DS and it was a constant trickle. My panties were soaked. I went through a whole day leaking. I thought it was urine as well. Also, it's not discharge like UTI discharge. It's watery and thus why it can be mistaken for urine.

I really would advise you to speak to your doc about this.
  • I thought this was happening to me so I had to go into labor and delivery last week. They tested fluid, and did a stress test on baby. Turns out I was just peeing myself. Glad I went in though!
  • Update: I was worried and google/the bump was not my friend haha so I called the doctor. Specifically, I asked to speak to the nurse just to ASK what she thought. Of course she tells me to come in so I did. I got the mean doctor again and her first comment was "you've been here 5 times in 19 weeks, what is the problem?" I was so embarrassed but I just answered coolly with "actually I'm 20 weeks."

Long story short, everything was fine. My regularly scheduled exam was Monday, so this just ended up taking the place of that. Baby's HR was 146 and all was well. Doc said that "either the water breaks or it doesn't this early" and that I would've had MUCH more liquid if that had been it.

I'm glad everything turned out to be OK, but the above bolded statement would've sent me off on her ass. Way to make your patient feel uncomfortable bringing issues to you.

  • @absolutelymaybe I was mad/embarrassed. I hate those people who always run to the doctor for every little thing but I feel like I've become one of them this pregnancy. I just feel like as  FTM I'm so much more worried than I thought I would be! Hopefully no more going other than regular appointments! (and my "Extras" so far were 2 HB checks for early freakouts and today)
  • it's your right to be seen by your own doctor. Maybe you could remind her of that next time she is being a bia bia. It's not like she's doing it for free

Glad everything is good with you.
