Trying to Get Pregnant

Newbie trying to get pregnant with PCOS

Hello everybody!

I am a newbie to The Bump (as well as trying to get pregnant!). I've been diagnosed with PCOS and within the past year I've been taking Provera to bring on a period. My husband and I have decided we are ready to start trying for a family, so this was our first month giving it a go. I took Provera, got my period, then took Clomid on days 5-9. Day 11, I was supposed to be ovulating and instead I got my period (which really threw me for a loop). I know this is our first month, really our first week trying, but I just don't know what is normal and how this process is supposed to go. Of course my doctor is out of the office until Monday, so I am going blind into this at the moment. I really appreciate anybody who is willing to share their story about taking Provera/Clomid, since I am really so new to this process and unsure the road ahead of me. Thank you so so much!!

  • Sorry, I should have mentioned...my OB doctor prescribed these both to me.

  • What PPs said. There are risks associated with Clomid that can negatively impact your future fertility (and current health) which is why it's important to be closely monitored, and honestly I would only trust a reproductive endocrinologist (RE) to properly prescribe and monitor Clomid cycles.

Have you and your husband been through standard fertility testing to make sure there aren't any other issues at play than your PCOS? If not, I'd see a RE for all the standard tests before taking a medication like Clomid.

The TTGP blog has a page all about Clomid: https://tbttgp.wordpress.com/taking-clomid/
  • Was there a reason you started clomid immediately? Did you try at all on your own? Have you ever charted to see if you ovulate? I can commiserate with the PCOS but as other posters have mentioned I think you should probably do some more research on clomid.

  • No advice on clomid but consider changing you SN if that is your real name.

  • I have no new information to add. I just wanted to say that I hope you find the answers you're looking for by getting the appropriate help (from an RE as the others have suggested). Welcome to the board and good luck! :)

  • There are a few less-invasive and less-risky measures to take to increase your fertility with PCOS. Sometimes changing your diet or starting Metformin can be enough to start having normal cycles/ovulation. My OB always says you need 3 things to make a baby: good fallopian tubes (which you can only check with an HSG), good semen, and to ovulate (at the right time too). For you to start bleeding on cycle day 11 is troubling to me. How long have you been TTC?

I would get a new doc-- one that jumps right in to fertility meds is not a mindful physician, IMHO. I've taken both medications in the past and they are hard-core drugs. I got them through my OB, which isn't ideal, but he at least did testing and monitored me on them. I plan on seeing a specialist before I start another cycle of clomid. It sounds like you may have more going on here than just not ovulating. Has your OB checked other hormone levels as well? Has he checked an US to see if you still have polycystic ovaries?

  • Thanks everybody! I really appreciate everything each one of you has said.

I made an appointment with an RE on the 14th, so I will hopefully get more answers then. Until then, no Clomid from my OBGYN!!
