Car rides...

Are miserable. I remember DD cried during car rides early on, but I think by the time she started daycare at 8 weeks she would just fall asleep in the car.

DS hates car rides. He cries the whole way. He will also start daycare at 8 weeks and be in the car for about 40 minutes one way to get there (add a toddler too). I might lose my mind if he doesn't get used to it.

Anyone else have a kid that hates car rides? Any hope it may get better? Any tips for survival?

  • No luck for me but DD cried hysterically in the car for a year. Never knew why. She would cry till she threw up and passed out. We were told babies dont get car sick i i still feel that was it. Hope it gets better soon. GL

My niece would scream in the car seat. My sister had a CD with womb like noises she would blast in the car. It helped a lot!

  • A pacifier helps for us in the car. Mine is asleep until we stop for too long like at a long red light or in traffic or in a drive thru, then it's screaming. Pacifier is instant peace.
  • What about a travel-size white noise machine? Like the small Cloud B sleep animals or the Homedics travel sound machine? The Cloud B animals have a 45-minute timer.

I'll have to try white noise. I just hope the toddler can be quiet enough to hear it!

  • We just drove 9 hours overnight to New Hampshire last night. I fed DD before we left at 7pm. We stopped once at midnight and arrived at 4am. I nursed her at midnight and 4. She slept the entire way through only getting fussy when we were stopped in construction. I had the Soothie on hand and white noise. Both calmed her down right away.

@Jcrewgirl85‌ that's what I'm used to with DD. That girl's head hit the carseat and she was out.

  • DS usually cries in the car until we get up on the highway. Then it's like a light switch and he stops. Must be something about going fast and the increased white noise.
  • It's not my proudest moment, but we strap an iPad to the back of DS's seat using an iPad headrest holder (sold on Amazon) and play cartoons. He's almost 2 years old, but this was how we pacified him very early on (probably around 8 weeks old) for moments at the house when we just needed a shower or a quick nap. It worked for us and may work for your LO.

We have a travel Sleep Sheep that worked really well for us when we were traveling. It plays nature sounds, but the ocean noise setting resembles white noise.

Opening the car windows a bit creates some good white noise. Also, I'll purposely drive on the road bumps occasionally when he's really worked up.

  • DD1 always loved the car seat, it was the only place I could set her down when she had to be held constantly and she would fall asleep instantly in the car. DD2 not so much, she freaks out as soon as she's in the car seat. I did find that cracking the window open calms her down.

  • I'm sure you've already thought of this, but we adjusted the positioning of the belts in DD's seat and it has seemed to help somewhat with her fussiness in the car. Cut it in half! Well see if it sticks.
  • DD hated her carrier and I did what Ellastrandlewis mentioned and changed the positioning of her belts a notch higher. It really helped.

The biggest problem we have is when she goes potty. This girl hates a dirty diaper and will scream and cry!

Do you all pull over when LO starts screaming in the car or just keep going to get home (or wherever) ASAP?

DD was great (as in slept instantly) at first but now is mostly crying. I discovered that in our older car I can just barely reach back and give her a finger to suck on (she only sort of sometimes takes a paci and drops it instantly when upset). It's a little tricky though since that car is a stick shift! In the other car I don't think I can reach.

I really hope she gets better in the car before I have to go back to work an hour+ away! (Her daycare will be near my work). I might have to get one or more of the gadgets you ladies recommended ...
