Any tips on pumping while nursing?

In order to save time in the morning, I've been trying to pump one side while LO eats off of the other. The only way I've been able to do it so far is to start LO eating and then have my husband hold the flange in place while I adjust the suction, etc. and then I take over holding it and hope that LO doesn't finish before I'm done pumping. Anyone have suggestions to make this easier and preferably a one-woman job?

Re: Any tips on pumping while nursing?

  • I pump while feeding every morning. My setup sounds a little goofy but it works for me. I use an old sports bra that I cut a hole in near the nipple area to hold the flange. I'm sure a hands free bra would work for this too. Then I nurse LO in a cradle position but lift the bra up so it's not covering my breast on that side. I have to tilt the bottle on the flange so it's almost horizontal otherwise it gets in the way. Sometimes she kicks or bumps it but so far this set up works pretty well for me. So far she hasn't finished before I was done pumping. As she gets old and more squirmy I'm not sure this will work as well. Hope this helps!

If I ever need to pump a bottle, I always do it first thing in the morning while feeding LO at the same time. I use a manual pump because it works so much better for me, so I might not be of any help here. Do you have a Boppy pillow? I use mine and I have LO cradled in my left arm eating, and with the right arm I "stand" my pump up, get adjusted, and start pumping. The Boppy helps me keep the pump in place if I have to let go of it for any reason.

Ha!  I wish I didn't have to do this, but if I didn't on days I go to work, 1) I wouldn't pump enough during the day for the next day's bottles and 2) I'd be leaky and engorged before the first time I can pump at work. I used to do it before or after, but it was just wasting too much time. My mom told me she used to do it simultaneously, so I thought I'd give it a go.

clb2196: Thanks for that link!  I have a handsfree pumping bra, but I can't nurse through it. Very cool!

starfisherJA82406: Thanks for the tips!  I also tilt the bottle, but only about 45 degrees. Sometimes LO likes to grab it though!  I haven't used the boppy in a while, but it's true that it may come in handy in this situation!
