Eating and sleeping schedule

My girl is 5 weeks old and was born at 37 weeks at 4.1lb due to intrauterine growth restriction. She is up to 5lb 2oz, but dr wants to see her gaining an ounce a day. So, she has me feeding her no more than 3 hours apart 15 min on each side, plus offering her 30ml expressed milk. I'm having trouble keeping her awake at night to eat the whole time. I want her to gain weight but I don't want to force her especially if she really is tired. Thoughts/suggestions?

Re: Eating and sleeping schedule

  • Just out of curiosity. Why 15 min on each aide? If she's not efficient yet she may be missing on that fatty hind milk which will make her grow!

I would see aLC like pp said. They know breastfeeding better than a pedi.

  • Try to tickly her feet, change her diaper, gently blow on her face - those should wake her up if she drifts off! GL!

I was told to do this while in the hospital after delivery and my understanding is that it's more applicable before the milk comes in than after. It helps to make sure both breasts are stimulated evenly. Once my milk came in, the nurses and LC said to let her nurse on the breast as long as she wants and when she comes off on her own, then offer the other side.

  • OP, I agree with the recommendation to see a lactation consultant. I'd also suggest feeding her more frequently. If she's not taking in as much because she's sleepy, then shorter and more frequent sessions may be helpful. But an LC can help give you tips for keeping her interested/awake.
