Change in measurement

I've been measuring 1-2 weeks ahead for awhile but yesterday at my 34 week checkup the doctor said I was measuring exactly 34 weeks. I was just wondering if anyone else has had a changes in measurement. Could it have anything to do with the baby not growing the same? I called the doctors office to ask and just got well if the doctor thought it was a problem he would've said something. That's not very reassuring since the same doctor screwed up my bloodwork before.

Re: Change in measurement

  • I was measuring small for the longest time and then she all of a sudden caught up to speed. I honestly wouldn't worry too much about it. It was a dick response from the nurse, but kind of true. My Dr. doesn't give up any information, without me prodding, unless he is concerned about it.

I've learned to just ask a ton of questions when I'm with him, even if he thinks they are dumb lol.

  • Thanks. I'm actually changing doctors but the new doctor said to keep my 34 week appt and schedule my next appt with them so they don't have my records yet. The old doctor doesn't know I'm leaving so that wasn't the reason for the response but it definitely solidified me wanting to switch. It was the nurse I spoke to.
  • They never even tell me. Last time I asked and she said that I was right on track, but I don't know if that's always been the case. I'd call back and ask for a nurse. No excuse for brushing you off like that!
  • I'm sorry the front desk staff didn't take your concern seriously. I would call back if you're worried -- not wanting to stress is a valid enough reason to want a real answer.

That said, a lot of pregnancy measurements and guidelines are averages. Most people gain weight at different rates since babies have growth spurts at different times.

This happened to me all the time last time and again this time. Babies go through growth spurts and it's my understanding that it's not a big deal unless it's more than 2 weeks off.

  • I had a thread about this a couple weeks back, where I had been measuring right on schedule, and suddenly was 5 cm behind. It really seems to have been a measurement error on the midwife's part, since a growth u/s showed that baby was right on schedule (4 lbs at 32 weeks). Since you're still measuring right on track, I'm sure all is well!

Fundal height is also very much influenced by baby's position. If he/she dropped or shifted it may change how your stomach measures.
    THIS.
  • I've been measuring anywhere from 1 to 2+ weeks ahead at my appointment, at my specialist U/S, and again 2 weeks ago.

I asked the last doctor (mine was out; he's had back surgery) if she thought my normal OB would move up my EDD.  She said not likely, that measurements aren't an exact science.

Okie-dokie then.  I'm not worried about it.  Kiddo'll come when kiddo'll come.  40 weeks, 38 weeks, 36 weeks...it's all good by me.  As long as it's not on my birthday.  Then this LO and I are gonna have some fights.  LOL!

I'm praying this one doesn't come before 38 weeks. We are not anywhere near ready yet! Hope your LO skips your birthday!
  • I was measuring 2 weeks ahead at my 28 week appointment and then 3 weeks ahead at my 30 week appointment. Then at my 32 week appointment, I was right and track...and I had gained 4lbs! I have no idea how that works, but my OB didn't seem concerned.

  • I wouldn't worry, either. Could be babe changed positions or you / she didn't gain as much between appointments this time. I'd ask next time though.

  • I just went in for my 31 week appointment and was measuring 33cm. Doc does want me to go for an ultrasound for my 33 week appointment but is not worried at all. Just want a better look to see if baby is measuring ahead. She wasn't worried because my sugar test was good. I'm excited to see my baby again in an ultrasound.
  • Most of the time it has to do with growth spurts is what my Dr said.  I was behind, then had a huge growth spurt, now I'm right on track.

  • I was measuring 2 weeks ahead up until my last apointment before the move. At that one I was measuring exactly 29 cm at 29 weeks. I spoke with my doctor about it and as long as Im within 4cm of how many weeks along he's fine with it. My last appointment yesterday I found out I lost weight so they are scheduling a grown scan for next week. Im excited that I get to see the baby but really.nervous something may be wrong
  • It's normal for the baby to have growth spurts. They don't always grow at the same rate the whole time.

    Was the Dr concerned?

  • We were measuring on track up until two weeks ago when we actually started measuring two weeks ahead. She sent me to get an ultrasound afterwards to check on the LO and she's doing great. The amniotic fluid is slightly low but my baby is thriving. I know it's hard not to worry, but do your best and make it a point to never accept half-assed answers from the hospital staff.

  • The baby was measuring right on track at my last ultrasound at 31 weeks, but when they measured me last week (34 weeks), I was measuring 32 weeks.  I will have a growth scan at my next appointment, but my doctor said it could be because I am tall & have a long torso or the baby is just a little smaller.  Either way, I think measuring your belly just can't be an accurate measurement from person to person and doctor to doctor.  After my growth scan next week, I am also going to have them measure me to see if they are the same.

  • I was measuring dead on until my 34 wk appt, when I measured 31 wks. I knew DD was laying sideways though, and my Dr told me that so long as u measure within 3 wks either way and it's not consistently above or behind where u should be, there is no reason for concern. Hth!

This is what I was going to say- it depends on where the measurement hits during the growth process.
  • Just echoing everything everyone else said--I would try not to be too concerned. We actually just had an ultrasound and baby was measuring about a week ahead and the next week they measured my stomach and I was measuring a week behind. As long as they aren't worried, I try not be worried.
