Baby Led Weaning

Is anyone doing BLW? We are just starting solids and going this route. We are loving it! I am amazed watching him eat and all the things he can manage on his own. Just curious to hear from others regarding how it's working out for you. Have you had any choking episodes? Does your baby swallow anything yet? What are favourite foods at your home?

Re: Baby Led Weaning

  • LO had some strawberry this week and started gagging on it. I patted his back. He doesn't seem to like them, but loves broccoli, weird kid :) he had toast for the first time yesterday and really seemed to enjoy that. Carrot sticks he he has trouble with, keeps dropping them, dogs love it though
  • Awesome! Yeah, my dog loves it too. He sits by LOs feet at meal times, waiting for him to drop food.
We'll have to try spaghetti. I've only given him stick shaped foods so far (fruits, veggies, meat, toast)
I love the pic! We should all post a pic of our BLWs at work :)
    Here's mine eating steak!

I can't post pics, but M really likes bbq pork. He eats plenty other foods, but goes nuts for bbq pork.

    We started at 6 months.

Choking is a common concern, but there isn't much to worry about. Most likely there will be some gagging as they are learning to eat and will spit out pieces that are too large. LO does this often, but is completely unfazed and relaxed. If he bites of a big piece, it usually just falls out when he opens his mouth to go for the next bite, if it does go to the back of the mouth, he just gags, spits it out and continues munching.

Choking is rare, but it can happen whether you are following BLW or not.

Just make sure baby is sitting upright, never leave them alone with food, and take a baby CPR course for peace of mind :)

6 1/2 months. LO likes potato wedges and apple wedges a lot also
  • LO seems to have a texture issue and hates slimy foods (baked sweet potato, avacado, bananas, etc), so I have tried roasting things more. He will pick things up now, but makes a face anytime he gets them to his mouth, except for steak he loved the steak. He hasn't swallowed anything yet, but we keep offering foods.

  • Been trying this with LO for about 2 weeks but so far it's not happening. He just likes to smoosh the food between his hands and play with it. EVERYTHING goes I to this kid's mouth except food apparently. It will happen eventually?

Eat with them, the same food if possible and LO will copy you. Ours ate some corn on the cob the other night after he watched daddy do it. It was adorable. Otherwise they don't know it's supposed to be eaten, they think it's just a toy!

Toast with avocado and banana for breaky! So messy but I think BLW is worth it. :)

  • R is WAY more into food than C ever was (is). He gets downright irritated if he's in his chair while we're eating and I don't give him something.

We don't do BLW... I give purées... But R far prefers real food.

First is a couple weeks ago: waffles and banana for breakfast. 2nd is this afternoon, completely pissed his peanut butter toast is gone.

  • We did corn on the cob the other night too! I kinda bit his cob a little bit to break up some pieces first. But he likes to try to eat it. I don't think he got anything off of it. I have been giving him cereal and prunes off a spoon though. But most times he grabs my hand to put the spoon in his mouth.
  • I just started offering puffs this past week. He doesn't quite have that pincer grip yet. Working on it :)

  • I want to start offering more chunks and real food, not just purées but have no idea where to start

For those nervous about BLW, it can seem a bit scary but I think it's also partly us Mom's being a bit paranoid and over protective too.....I watch my LO and she does a really good job eating , even spits out big chunks. Im so impressed. I don't leave her alone with any food just in case but you'd be surprised what these babies can do :)
I'm still nervous she'll choke but you'll be nervous of that regardless of when they start eating something other than a puree.

How do you handle minimizing salt for LO when you eat out?

My parents are in town and decided to take LO and I out to eat at Olive Garden when I got home from work last night. I had BF LO before leaving for the restaurant and when we got there I had them hold the dressing on the salad and pulled out lettuce and a tomato for him to try (lettuce was fun to play with but the tomato was a miss and thrown to the side immediately). I'm sure he would have loved to chew on a breadstick, but it was so salty that I didn't give him it. I pulled some unsauced pasta for him to try (not a fan) and we gave him a cooked red bell pepper (actually found something he liked).

This was my first experience eating out with LO since starting BLW and I have to say it was actually fun. I didn't know we would be going out to eat, so I wasn't super organzied but thankfully we were close to home and the service was quick that we made it through the entire dinner and got home just in time to get ready for bed. I now know of a few things to keep handy in my diaper bag for next time.

  • LO just had dices tinned pears this morning in his porridge, they are nice and soft for them to gum. He likes toast with some butter to soften it. Carrot sticks that have been steamed a little to soften them. Yesterday he had bread with spreadable cheese. Today I bought some cucumber so we'll try that in sticks.
I take a food pouch when we go out. A home filled one or a store one if I'm in a rush and I have baby rice crackers and rusks always in my bag :)
  • We're not really doing BLW (I still give rice cereal and purees as his main meals). However, I've started giving him pieces of food we're eating. This mainly started on vacation, out of necessity. We ate at a lot of restaurants and he would be done with his purees by the time our food came, so I gave him little pieces of what we were having to keep him occupied in his highchair. So far, he's tried puffs, pancakes, toast, dinner rolls, gingerbread cookies, mexican rice, and a few bites of ice cream.

I've been giving him fairly small pieces that he isn't likely to choke on, but that are still large enough for him to be able to grip. He's still hit or miss on actually getting the food from his hands to his mouth, but he is getting better with practice.
