Breastfeeding

9 month old losing interest

My daughter is nine months old and she is down to three feedings a day, four if I'm lucky and only about 3-7 min at a time. Even then, unless she's tired it's a huge fight. I don't know if this is normal or if I need to start supplementing. How much do babies need to nurse at this age and is it normal to drop 2-3 feedings a day all at once?

  • Thanks so much, this is reassuring. It seems like it'll be a phase. We worked so hard to EBF I would hate for it to end so soon!

  • When you say EBF, I assume you mean you haven't been pumping and giving bottles at all?

Sometimes when DS is really having a hard time b/c of teething or whatever else, I will break down and give him a bottle of pumped BM just to get some milk into him, although I ordinarily prefer to BF only whenever we are together.  If you are open to pumping and giving bottle, you could try this if you think the issue may be teething.  It is just easier for them if they are in pain, fussy or impatient.  I don't do it often, but I have done it before.

Right, she hasn't had a bottle since she was 2 wks old, I tried giving her a bottle of expressed BM when she was 6 mos and she would scream bloody murder every time it got near her. Now that she'll take a sippy cup of water I think I'll probably be able to do that.

Her doctor said she had 4 teeth coming through(I counted 6) so if the bottle will feel better we'll definitely try it! Thanks!

There have been so many ebbs and flows for us. We hit a year next week - I can't believe it. I think the key will be keeping up supply until LO realizes she wants to go back to breast. Yiu are doing a great job, mama. :)

Thank you :) it's good to hear that we'll get through it from someone who has been there! Congrats on the year!! That's huge!
