Carsickness - Help!

DS has always been a little pukey because of his GI issues, but lately everytime we get stuck in traffic, he gets carsick. EVERYWHERE. It's beginning to make me think twice about leaving the house. It takes forever to clean the straps (at least I can wash the cover) and then I have to wait for everything to dry. Did you go through this? What did you do? Help a frazzled mommy out!

Re: Carsickness - Help!

  • We discovered a couple of months ago that DS gets car sick in really heavy stop-and-go traffic. The first time it happened, we weren't sure if he was sick or ate something that made him sick. But then it happened again and we realized why. We live in southern California so freeway traffic during commute times is terrible. For us, we just don't take him in the car during those times. It happened both times for us on Friday around 4 or 5 pm. I hope you can find some way to help your little guy. I am sure the pedi will have suggestions. I know how awful it is to have puke everywhere.

  • Oh no!! I don't have any tried or true advice but maybe could you get some big towel bibs to lay across him?? Maybe try some gripe water before he gets in the car to soothe his tummy?? Sorry you have to deal with that, cleaning car seats is a pain and Im sure your DS doesn't enjoy puking either :(

  • I'm on mobile so I can't see how old your LO is. DD went through a car sickness phase around 2 - 2 1/2. We eventually had to teach her how to puke in a bucket. We keep it in the car. We also decided that after she got sick a couple of times that she would psych herself out any time we were in the car and make herself sick again. Anyways, we moved her seat so that nothing was really blocking her view (like other seats) and made sure she was always looking up and not at toys or books. I'm sorry. I know it's awful. Cleaning up after that is the worst because it's so inconvenient to take everything apart. I'm not sure any of what worked for us will help you but I hope you find something!

  • Sully used to get car sick, along with screaming bloody murder every time the car stopped and once we turned him forward facing he was fine.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

Like @itsmevkb‌, I was going to say forward facing might help once he's old enough. My little cousin had to start on Dramamine as soon as she was old enough, check with your pedi. I wonder if like sea bands or anything might help?

  • Thanks for all the ideas! He's 16 months. He's big enough to go FF according to his specific seat's weight/height requirements. I know some people will hate me for it, but after talking to the ped today, we're leaning towards flipping him to see if it works. I think it's a combo deal - #1 it's super hot back there because the giant wings on the seat keep him from getting any air and #2 we got a new car a couple months ago and even I feel a little "urpy" when I'm not the one driving.

NO!!!!! PLEASE do not flip him forward! If your pedi actually suggested that, then he is goes against AAP guidelines.

    Please read this:

    https://csftl.org/why-rear-facing-the-science-junkies-guide/

Ultimately, it is your decision of course, but forward facing before age 2 is literally risking his life. What is legal and what is safe are two very different things.

For the heat issue, have you seen a Noggle? It's amaz-balls!!!

    https://www.nogglenation.com/

You can try ginger, sea bands, water, peppermint, empty tummy (or slightly full tummy), dress him in as little as possible to keep cooler.

There is also this crafty contraption:

  • @kmc84 I really do believe in RF as long as possible. I don't care about his bent legs and the convienence and all the other things people whine about. But we're in a situation now where it's almost every day and then we can't go anywhere while everything dries and we're at our wit's end. Don't worry - the ped told us that he does recommend RF as long as possible whenever possible.

  • @kmc84 I know! That's why I asked here and not the general population. I know lots of people feel passionately in different ways and have the resources instead of just yelling! :)

I'm also looking into making a "bib" out of a dishtowel that I can put on after he's all strapped in, so that when the inevitable happens I can just bag that. It won't help with the warmth issue, but it will help with the clean up.

I just thought of something else that you could try. I don't know what car seat you have, but if you have a car seat that allows different angles while rear facing, have you tried sitting him as upright as allowed?

  • @kmc84 We do have him as upright as possible. When we put it back in we put it one more click vertical, but that must be for FF because he was past vertical and leaning forwards so we clicked it back. We're going to look into a noggle because it does seem the most logical way to get him some air!

@dragonfly1226 You make a good point there ... it's almost always been morning and he almost always has yogurt for breakfast. And on daycare days he eats after he gets there - and it never happened those days. Definitely will rethink breakfast menu.
