Question for the Paleo Ladies

I've been paleo since last September. I wasn't craving sugar or carbs at all but all bets are off now. All I've been able to think about for the last couple weeks is sweets, pasta, bread. And donuts, oh the donuts. I dream about sugar and carbs, I crave them constantly, I can smell them when nobody else around me can. I've been avoiding the temptation except for the ginger beer that helps with nausea and the donut I had yesterday. Meat is not appealing to me at all. Raw meat makes me gag and the smell of cooked meat isn't much better. Thankfully, I still love veggies and fruit.

Is anyone else feeling this way? What are you doing to combat it? Do you think my body is telling me I need more carbs? I've felt better the last 9 months being paleo than any other time in my life and lost 60 lbs so my mind knows this stuff isn't good for me. I wish my body would cooperate.

Re: Question for the Paleo Ladies

  • Yes...all I'm craving is carbs and cheese!! I know I'm eating horrible but most meats don't sound good at all. I'm just trying to stay gluten free..most of which still isn't very healthy.  I'm hoping after 1st tri it will be easier to stick to paleo.

  • I'm not paleo, but I can say this: first tri is all about survival. Eat what you can, make good choices as often as possible, and then work on getting back to your normal when you feel better more consistently.

  • I was mostly paleo but also very very low carb. As soon as I got pregnant I started craving carbs. I ate them because they make me feel less nauseous and I'm a firm believer that your body knows what you need... the only craving I won't give into is gluten. I've caved and eaten sugary things I shouldn't have but I don't regret it. The craving was fulfilled and I'm back to my mostly paleo ways.
  • I think your body is probably telling you something.  You need a lot of available energy to build that little peanut.  Like PP said, give in when you need it, and eat paleo when the craving is satisfied.

I think that cravings are telling you something.  i.e. - they tell you if you've got cravings to eat dirt or chalk, that you need to see your doctor.  It usually means you've got some kind of mineral deficiency.  I think your cravings for carbs mean you need a little energy burst for your growing baby, and I probably wouldn't ignore that.

Maybe don't eat the entire contents of the bakery, but eat something that both satisfies your craving and can fit within your lifestyle.  :)

  • Whew, I'm not the only one! Okay, I'm gonna go for it and start adding in some whole grains tomorrow.

I think I could eat the contents of an entire bakery right now. That's how much I am craving carbs and sweets. :)

  • You could try making grain free bread or muffins.  I do that.  I have also noticed that my ms is better if I can make myself eat some protein even though it doesn't sound appealing.  Or maybe eating more starchy vegetables like sweet potato.  The problem with craving donuts it that once you eat one, you are going to crave them again.  This happens to me when I let myself have a little sugar I start wanting it all the time.  Do your best but still try to make good choices.  In my last pregnancy I let myself have whatever I wanted and I wish I'd made better food choices because it really affects your overall wellness.
  • I've been more lchf/keto than paleo but I'm right there with you. I want all the carbs!!!!!!

I've given in and all diet bets are off. I eat what I want right now. Like 2 weeks ago I NEEDED a damn bagel. And I ate 2. And it was fucking amazing so no regrets. I have noticed that I am craving carbs a bit less now so Im hoping to get back on track by 2nd tri

  • I have been paleo for about two years. I am just doing what my body tells me to. I have an aversion now to most meats that I loved. Just doing gluten free right now, also steering clear of processed foods. You don't want to beat yourself up on this, your body is going through a lot.
  • @annagrya  My biggest fear about eating carbs is not being able to stop once I start. I honestly do not know if I can eat bread, pasta, etc. in moderation. Do you have any good recipes for grain free bread or muffins?

Thank you everyone. Honestly. It really helps just to know I'm not the only person feeling this way and being reminded to listen to my body and not be so hard on myself.

  • what PP said, its about survival and your body telling you what it needs to grow this baby and all it's parts...esp the brain development. Dont diet right now...trust me, Im on #2 and 2nd tri is much easier to eat right and once you have the babe, you can go back to your diet!!

Those muffins look so good! The bread, too, but the muffins are calling my name! I'm gonna have to pick up some blueberries on the way home tonight and make them. Thank you!
