body awareness

I wasn't sure how to title this. DD has started to stick her hand down the front of her diaper a lot recently. I know body exploration is normal, but I am just not quite sure how to handle this.

First off, DD is non-verbal and developmentally delayed, SPD, and ASD. She only does it if she is lounging in the living room, I have never seen her do it out in public. DH is uncomfortable and tries to tell her no, but from what I have heard you aren't supposed to make kids feel ashamed, right? Do we just let her go about it while in the living room? Not sure she would understand if we tried to get her to do it privately. To be honest, I am not even sure what she is doing in there.

My other concern was that I could be wrong about what she is doing. Could it be a sign of her being itchy or that there was an underlying problem she needs help with?

Re: body awareness

  • DS was sticking his hand on his butt this weekend in the living room under his shorts and underwear. I have no real advice and hope someone can give some advice on this.

I too have not seen this done in public.

  • No great advice here. My 6 yo son is going through a phase where his hands are constantly on his butt or grabbing his crotch (outside of his clothes). I keep asking him what's going on and from what I can tell, it's likely an underware issue (too big or too small). The lining of his wet swim trunks drives him nuts- that much he can express to me. LOL, I've got a classic picture from this weekend: DS and his buddy who is also on the spectrum in the backyard, two cute kids with awkward social smiles in wet swimsuits both clinging to their crotchular regions. DS is 6 and understands most things but he doesn't seem to get why hanging on to your private parts in public is a faux pas. So we just keep gently reminding him by saying things like "do you have to go to the bathroom? No? Well why are you grabbing your crotch?"
  • Thank You Auntie, your advice is helpful as always
