Trouble TTC

Long Time Lurker Intro Post

Hey everyone!

I've been a lurker for a long time but I thought it was about time I introduced myself.  I'm 30 yrs old and DH is 28 yrs old.  We got married in August 2012 and I immediately came off of birth control pills after being on them for 12 yrs.  We continued to use protection for a while so I could get my cycle back on track (I've been irregular since my first period so it was no surprise to me that I was irregular once I came off of the pill).  We waited until May 2013 to actively start trying but I was still having 45-55 day cycles so I went to the OB.  She did all sorts of testing on me and DH in October 2013,  My husband's SA came back normal.  My HSG was clear, hormone levels were normal, but the u/s showed polycystic ovaries so I was diagnosed with anovulatory PCOS.  I did one cycle of Clomid 50mg CD 4-8 in February 2014 but I had no significant follicular growth (there were tons of follicles on both sides but nothing bigger than 8mm by CD14).  I decided to switch to the RE in April 2014.  She did more tests, including a saline u/s (normal) and a 3hr glucose test which showed IR.  She put me on Metformin 1000mg a day and a low-carb, low-sugar diet.  I've lost 20 lbs since then and this month we did a cycle with Femara 2.5mg x10 on CD 3.  I had a 19mm follicle on my left ovary on CD17 so I triggered and we did TI.  I've being using the Endometrin suppositories since the trigger shot as well.  Like an idiot, I took pregnancy tests so I could see the HCG leave my system (it was nice to see the two pretty lines though when it was in my system even though I know it wasn't real).  I took one yesterday and it was still negative.  I go for my beta tomorrow morning but I am not very hopeful.  I've been having a little bit of pain on the side where my left ovary is and I'm convinced that this cycle didn't work and that AF is just going to rear her ugly head.  This has been a long journey and we're paying OOP so we only have enough saved to do a couple more treatments with the femara, ovidrel, and TI before we have to give up for a while and figure out what our other options are.  It's been difficult and I have tons of pregnant friends and family members who I pretty much just want to punch most of the time.  Anyway, that's my story.  Thanks for listening.

Stef

Re: Long Time Lurker Intro Post

  • Yeah my RE seems to know what she is talking about and she was pretty confident that she would be able to get me to ovulate.  I'm definitely doing my part by eating right and losing weight too but so much of it really feels out of your control which is difficult for a control freak like myself.

  • Welcome! I'm glad you were able to see an RE and diagnose the IR. :)

The cost of IF really sucks. I'm not sure if this is possible with anovulatory PCOS, but my RE has me use Femara (Letrozole) without a trigger, just waiting on OPKs. I just mention it because it would shave off $100+ for the trigger. And without male factor infertility, timing definitely does not have to be to the hour - regular sex in the fertile days would make sure you always had motile sperm ready and waiting. Just a thought!

  • @bunnyberry I got super lucky because while my insurance doesn't cover anything else they did cover the injectible (which makes no sense to me, they say they don't cover the "infertility treatments" but they cover the actual meds used in the treatment).  It was like a $70 copay and then the pharmacy I used (Apothacary by Design, it's some mail away pharmacy located I think in Maine) had a coupon so the Ovidrel was actually free.  I don't know if I'm going to get that lucky again for another cycle though but I am so completely grateful that I saved the money on medications for this cycle.  It's the RE visits that kill me.  She charges a flat fee of $600 per medicated cycle with TI.  I had 4 transvaginal ultrasounds this past cycle (1 baseline, CD10, CD14, CD17) so I guess that's not completely unreasonable but that's more than we pay in rent (we live in Florida).

nighthawk646wife I think the Metformin helped me lose the weight but I am also on a low-carb, low-sugar diet.  The only sugars I eat come from fruit and the only carbs are from fruits or veggies (aside from my one cheat meal every week).  I also go walking a lot now.  The doctor has me on Metformin 500mg twice a day.  She was going to increase it to three times a day but I don't think I could handle the GI symptoms if I increased it.
