Breastfeeding

Is it oversupply/forceful let-down?

Over the last week or so, my 9 week old has been spitting up allot more than usual and his poop has turned super watery and the last two days it has smelled like yeast. He has been feeding for shorter periods, maybe 5-10 minutes at a time, and pulling off several times during the feeding. He has also been passing allot of gas, but he hasn't been fussy. I do seem to have a pretty fast let-down, it sprays out and occasionally makes him gag and cough at the beginning of the feeding. When my milk does let down, my breasts tingle ALLOT and hurt a little. I don't feel engorged unless he goes a little longer between feedings than normal. Does this sound like an oversupply/forceful let-down problem? If so, have you found something that works good for you? Today I have been taking him off the breast when the milk lets down and catching the spraying milk in a towel, then letting him nurse when it quits spraying out.

  • That is exactly what it sounds like to me.  I would continue to let the milk spray into a towel, and try feeding only one side at a time.  If you are still getting an over supply I would switch to block feeding.

    Yep, PPs right... GL.
  • This is me all the way. I only nurse DS for 5-7 min because that's all he wants. I have all the issues you mentioned... Tingling and pain during letdown, baby gags and chokes, pulls off and cries, wants to nurse longer then pulls off when milk starts to come out. I do let the milk spray in a towel which helps. I block feed, but I'm not sure it helps. I'm planning on seeing a LC.

  • Hello! This sounds exactly like what happened to me with DS. He started to refuse the breast over it and I had to pump him bottles (which I do not recommend) eventually I started block feeding and that helped some. He got MUCH better with age though. Keep trying! It'll get better.

  • Sounds like what we experienced at the beginning and that was the issue.  You're doing a good thing with spraying a little into a towel.  We also had good luck feeding from one side at a time.  So when he comes off and you would normally swich sides, put him back on the first side.  Kelly mom also has a good section on this.  Good luck!
