Job Opportunity? WWYD *UPDATE: boo*

edited June 2014 in October 2014 Moms
So currently I work 2nd shift, which for my organization is 12:00-8:30, Sun-Thurs.  I have to drop DS1 at the sitter's house at 11:30 and I get home just after 9 PM.  This means that I miss all school functions, family dinners, and helping with homework (DD is really struggling).  I also only get one full day off (Sat) with DH.  But because DH works early (4:30/5:00 AM), he gets off work before 3.  It ends up that DS1 (and DD in the summer) only stays with the sitter for 4 hours a day, 4 days a week.  We get a discount because we don't use the sitter very much.  Also, it's great for scheduling around doctor appointments.  AND the kids spend a majority of the day with at least one parent.

Someone on the morning crew is leaving, so there is a 7:30-3:30 Mon-Fri shift available. It would mean that DS1 and DS2 would be at the sitters for the length of the shift and an extra day, which would cost more (about $50 extra a week).  The time they spend with a family member would be less, but the time they did get would be with the entire family.  Also, I would be able to help DD with her homework, and hopefully we can bring her up to grade level.

I'm torn.  DS1 is older and fairly independent, so I like the arrangement of having him at the sitter's only 4 hours a day and being home with DH in the evening, but since getting pregnant, I'm so sad at the idea of leaving DS2 without his mommy from lunch until bed time.  But then it also makes me sad to think that he will spend that time with a sitter when half of it could be with his dad instead.  Andplusalso, DD complains that I'm never home and she never sees me.

If you had this opportunity, would you try for it?  I have to say something soon because I know the other evening employee is interested in the position, too.

**Update**
I had mentioned to my coworker, who also works evenings, that I was interested in the morning spot because of family issues.  He responded with, "Yeah, evenings off would be nice."  Next thing I know he calls our boss into his office to tell her that he wants the position.  WTF.  He has seniority (by 23 days) and asked first, so he gets it (I already went to her to express my interest and she let me know).  I am so outraged and betrayed.  I don't know if this is something he had been wanting for a while, or if he wanted it because I wanted it, or what.  But I'm seriously butthurt.  The next morning opportunity will come when he or my boss quits, and I certainly am not going to try for my boss's position if it comes to that.

I just want to cry in my office and NOT work with this coworker for the next month until he moves into the morning position.

Thanks for your input, though, ladies.
