Food for thought - or vice versa

So after making a large batch of puréed spinach and carrots for LO, thinking that spinach would be the new food this week, I read that spinach shouldn't be given until like 10 months due to nitrates. Geez.

So..... I don't want to overthink food but I also don't want to be uninformed either.

My pedi just said - give her everything, except honey and WCM
Ummm I think I need a little more guidance than that.

What are your food rules and does anyone have a good, simple, resources they are using on when to intro certain foods?

Right now this is what I'm working with:
1) no honey
2) no WCM
3) Wait on strawberries a bit
4) expose her to as much as possible before 1 year

I tried BLW once but got nervous, but thinking I might give some finger foods another shot- I'd love for there to be some foods I could have LO try when we are out eating?

Sorry so many thoughts!
Please tell me yours or point me in the direction of a good resource.

Thanks!

  • We are holding off on some dairy (yogurt and WCM) because DS is MSPI.  I suspect he is growing out of it though, so we will likely try yogurt around 9 mos.

No honey and I try to avoid nuts if I can but only because we have a family history of allergies with some tree nuts.

FWIW my ped actually suggested giving spinach at the 6 mo appt.

No rules here other than no WCM or nuts until 12 months.  We've given spinach but maybe it's like carrots - one of those foods you're better off buying than preparing?  We've also given fruit purees with strawberries in them, because I've read that commercial preparation removes whatever it is in fresh strawberries that causes common reactions (no food allergies in our family or I'd probably have paid enough attention to explain myself better).

I'm working with roughly the same understanding. When we do nuts, which won't be until a year, this will sound crazy I freely admit but I like the idea: I'm going to give them in close proximity to the local ER. My cousin is a teacher, she did this with her kids- she has seen too many severe allergic reactions at her school, she wasn't messing around. The local hospital is over a 20 minute drive, without traffic, and there is always traffic. Better safe than sorry.
  • Thanks, I am thinking I might give the spinach anyways, maybe just a half portion with oatmeal or something but it just got me thinking.

There are so many things to try so I don't want to rush any one food if there is reason to wait.

@Kate030‌ if it's not a pain to do this it doesn't seem like a bad idea. You only need to do it once and if it gives you peace of mind I get it.
  • My pedi just said no honey until 1 year.  She even said milk and nuts were fine (as long as there is no known allergies in my or DH's families, which there aren't).

DD had a slight reaction to melon, and then one of my friends sent me a site that talked about not giving melon unitl 1 year.  I asked my pedi, she said melon should be OK, but since we had a slight rash, then go ahead and wait until 1 year, but try again then since melon allergies are very rare.

I feel like everyone has a different list of what you should wait a year for...

I've never heard of waiting a year for spinach!

Thanks for clarifying @Sing2phins‌ about milk, I might try cottage cheese and yogurt soon then.

@DevynnMarie‌ I'd like to move past just puréed foods too! Especially when we go out to eat I'd li ke to get more comfortable giving her something off my plate or a taste of real food here and there, might try soon
  • My first solids my mom gave me was a jar of spinach..mmmmh I love spinach.

With that said I do this:
    •no honey/dairy/nuts until 1 year
•no strawberry until later and very
    carefully (allergies in my family)
    •finger foods:
    -Meats, left attached to bone
-Veggie/Fruit in tiny pieces or in a
    Mesh Feeder
    -Hard Bread (rarely)
    -Purées that have a thicker
    consistency and aren't runny
