Maternity Clothes

I'm a little bigger (5'9" and as off my last appointment 262) I wore an XL pre-pregnancy, but I have no idea what size I'm supposed to buy now. I'm due in December, but it's so hot now in summer, I want to make sure that what I buy can last me until the colder months, but I don't want it to be too big now. This is my first pregnancy. HELP!!!!

Re: Maternity Clothes

  • Not sure about sizing, but go to your local Goodwill. I got a pair of maternity jeans, maternity capris, and 3 maternity shirts all for $20 total. You can try stuff on to see what fits, and you won't feel guilty about the money you're spending when a shirt is like 4 bucks and jeans are 5. Good luck!

  • Ditto what PP said. If you can get away with not spending a lot of money on something you're only going to wear for a few months, that's great! Then you won't feel as bad if you have to make additional purchases later if the weather changes.

As for sizes, I wear the same size as I did before, just in Maternity. So if you wore a size 10 pants before, you're probably going to want to try on a size 10/12 in maternity. Or at least start there.

Our Salvation Army and local thrift stores don't have a any maternity clothes. :[

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind.
  • Most maternity clothing can be bought in your "normal" size. That said, you may not have to buy a lot...it all depends on your bump and how much/where you gain. It's often worth it to buy as you need, rather than all up front since you won't know how things will fit or what will be comfortable at a given stage.

Many women also find certain non-maternity items work if bought a size or two bigger, particularly loose flowy tops. Length is the measurement that can be tricky (again, depends on your torso). Maxi dresses are great for summer, as are foldover jersey skirts and long tank tops. Tanks can then be layered with a cardigan or shrug in fall and winter.

  • I second maxi dresses and stretchy skirts and shirts. You can buy these non maternity and they can work.

If you buy regular maternity, buy your regular size.

  • I have been wearing the same size in maternity pants/shorts. I went up a size in tops and dresses because my boobs CAN'T BE TAMED, but for the most part, I'm staying true to size.

  • I honestly still haven't bought maternity clothing. I've been sticking to leggings and lower rise jeans. I had to go up a size in jeans, but it was cheaper than buying maternity jeans. I'm 22 weeks and I'm holding out on buying maternity clothes because they're expensive… But if you have to, I guess look in thrift stores. I will if I absolutely have to. I'm really tall so I also can't really find maternity clothes that are long enough for me.

  • Try Thredup if your local thrift stores don't have maternity clothing.  You can't try it on, but they do tell you the inseam of the pants.  (Since you're tall, I'm assuming you have long legs like me).  There also should be some sales this weekend, so try Old Navy and Gap maternity.  Good luck!

  • Check out consignment stores near you too. I know the children's store by me has a maternity section, and there's a women's consignment store that has a maternity section.

Also I've bought a few ribbed tanks from old navy that were only a few dollars and aren't maternity. I'm 36 weeks and they still fit.
