Want to TTC #2 but no maternity insurance...

Re: Want to TTC #2 but no maternity insurance...

  •  Not sure why the message did not post when I tried the first time...

So I bought my health insurance because my husband's is like paying a second mortgage when we added on myself and my daughter when I turned 26. My insurance doesn't have maternity coverage and won't until January 15th. Our daughter is 18mo and we really want to start trying for another in August or September. Is anyone in the same situation? I don't know if we would qualify for Medicaid or if my OB even accepts it, but does anyone know if you can have health insurance and Medicaid too? TIA

  • I could be totally wrong and have prenatal coverage on my insurance--but this past year when some other obamacare coverage kicked in I started getting free birth control and also now have free pre-natal coverage. I would look into this further and see if anything on your plan has changed or anything. Could be worth looking into.

This. And if you really don't have coverage...

I'd wait to start trying until December. That way you wouldn't even be at a point of needing to see a doctor until your benefits started even if you got pregnant immediately.
    ...then this.

I was under the impression with the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) that maternity had to be covered.

In any case, I would wait until you have coverage to start trying.  It's just 6 months, and you want to make sure you have good maternity care when you are pregnant.

  • I would wait.  If you get pregnant before you have insurance, they could consider it a pre existing condition and and your coverage could be denied.  Also, you can't get medicaid if you already have health insurance.  Those who have both have it for special circumstances.  I would wait until your insurance is in effect and then TTC.  Also if you have to buy maternity insurance, it is usualy paid for all up front and only covers care for a normal pregnancy. It can start at about $3000 +.  It wont'  cover any complication that would occur if any.

  • Just wait until you are covered.  Easy as that.
