Is this a yeast infection?

DD rarely has diaper rashes -- she's had maybe 2-3 her whole life.  But I've been noticing one the past couple of days and none of the creams I've been using are making it any better.  This one looks different b/c it's individual red bumps (slightly raised)... usually if she has a rash, it's just general redness.  Is this a yeast infection?  The nurse said to use Lotrimin (sp?) cream and hydrocortisone, alternating 2x a day.  We used the Lotrimin once before (per dr's suggestion), but it did nothing for her, but then again, maybe that one wasn't a yeast infection.  My best friend uses a prescription called Nystatin for her DD's yeast infections and swears by it, but when I talked to the nurse, she hadn't heard of it and just said the Lotrimin should work fine.  Thoughts?

Re: Is this a yeast infection?

  • We use a prescription for Nystatin whenever DD gets a rash like this. It works great. I'm very surprised the nurse hadn't heard of it. On the tube it says "Nystatin Ointment, USP 100,000 USP Nystatin Units." We were given the rx because Desitin wasn't working. The only type of "diaper rash" DD has ever gotten are individual raised bumps like you're describing.

  • That's what DD's yeast infections look like.  She gets them all the time.  I feel so bad for her :(  We tried using nystatin in the past, but it didn't clear it up and we had to keep getting the prescription refilled.  We use regular Lotrimin from the pharmacy section of any store and it clears it right up.  Now we actually use the off brand of Lotrimin and that works just as good for less $.
  • DS had a yeast infection once. It was on the area below his belly, but above his penis - kind of where the diaper is fastened. It was lots of little red bumps. I thought it was eczema, which he occasionally gets in the same spot, but after the hydrocortisone and aquaphore didn't clear it up I brought him to the Dr. She prescribed a yeast medicine and it cleared up within 2 days.
