Decorating Help!! (sorry, long)

We are painting the nursery this weekend. We are doing 3 walls cream, with one wall that the crib will be on, navy blue. The trim well be red. We are doing a nautical theme. All of that is basically set in stone.

What I need help with is the furniture I have is all unfinished except the crib which is dark cherry. Should I (DH) stain the furniture to match the crib or go with something a little different and do it red to match the trim. I have a small dresser/changing table, a glider, and a night stand. I really think the glider is going to be red with blue and white cushions but I'm not sure about the dresser and night stand.
I don't want it to be too much red.
The room is large and very bright. Sometimes I think the light is on in the day time when it's just the sun.
Anyone who has a good eye for these things help!! =) Thanks in advance!

  • Awesome theme!!

Red furniture would be cool, but perhaps a pain to change when DS gets older and wants to personalize his room? It depends, I guess, on the destiny of the furniture. Will this be his in his room forever (minus changing table, of course), or will it be used for future babies? Do you want the furniture to grow with him?

I might rather stain it or paint it white/cream so that you don't end up having to strip and repaint or stain it in the future, and then I would add some red accessories around the room. Maybe paint an oar red to hang on the wall, or spray paint a lamp red for the dresser. Laundry hamper could be red too...or why not spray paint the diaper genie red? :P

  • It depends on the size of the room but two pieces of red furniture might not be too bad.  Especially if the glider is red with blue cushions on your walls are pretty neutral.
  • That's a lot of extra work to strip and stain all the furniture. I wouldn't personally. I'd just deal with it.. But I'm not picky about that kind of stuff. All our furniture is white in DS's room. We won't buy furniture for DS2 until we move back to Kansas. With his stuff I plan on doing a dark wood for his crib.

  • Thanks everybody. The furniture is probably not going to grow with him because it's so I'm not worried about too small for anything except for holding my diapers stash. I'll post pictures of it as soon as I can. Then maybe you can get a better idea. I'm just worried about it being too loud, but I also think red furniture would be awesome! I'm conflicted lol.
  • I love the idea of the other furniture being red!!
  • Oh and too be clear, the dresser is the changing table.
  • Cool theme. Red would be cool. Love that idea.

  • Perhaps paint the dresser navy and do the just drawer fronts in red? If the dresser is on the opposite side of the room from the navy accent wall, it would help balance the room and would solve your concern of too much red.

I agree with the not too much red. I say red should be your accent color and blue and white your primary colors. I would suggest a white, black, or blue glider with maybe a red pillow.

This isn't really related to what you were asking, but I figured I'd put my decorating 2 cents in!

Would you guys consider doing vinyl wall decals? Here are a couple cool ones I found online :)

We are actually doing a shark decal under his name over the crib! =)

I really like this idea too! =)

    Or use red nobs/handles

Like maybe baby dresser, white drawers, and red handles?
  • Yes and maybe blue triming
  • I think the red trim will look ridiculous.
  • I think the red trim will look ridiculous.

It's not around the whole room, just around the doors and window. Just for a pop. But like I said, the wall color is already set in stone.
  • I agree with a PP who said stain it cherry to match and make one piece red. I think you would have more of a dramatic pop that way. I'm along the lines of using a couple primary colors and accenting with something bright. I'm also not sure about the red trim. Maybe red chair rail? Also loving those nautical wall decals!

When I originally read the part about red trim, I thought you were referring to the "accent color", not literally red trim. Please don't. Add pops of red in other ways. Completely agree that red trim, even if just the windows and doors, would look odd (at best).

  • Ok so as for the trim, should I do it navy? Both doors and the window are on walls that will be cream.

Is there any trim/moulding in the rest of the room? I'm a bright-white trim kinda girl.

    No there isn't anymore trim

trim should be white or natural wood. Never, ever paint trim any other color.

I would still stick with white. Depending on the creaminess of the cream, ;) the brighter and whiter the better, to provide greater contrast. It'll look great.

  • Ok thanks everybody! =)
  • I would stain the furniture to match the crib and maybe just do the glider red. Or just do the dresser red and the rest cherry stained. I think one red piece would pop and look cool but too much red could be overbearing. I'm imagining your room ending up similar to this from what you said. Sounds cute!
Not to hijack the thread or anything but I'm glad you posted this pic. Our furniture is cherry & we're doing light blue, navy & red. I just bought a red bookcase for a pop of color (esp since finding a light blue one is darn near impossible) and I was worried about how the red would look with the cherry. But this looks awesome. I can take a sigh of relief now and actually open the bookcase box! lol

Eh, I don't agree. I always love the character houses with colored trim. That said, don't do red, OP. I think it could be okay in theory but it's going to be super tricky to pull off.

  • Yeah my living room has colored trim and its beautiful, but it's also a neutral color. Walls are tan with chocolate trim and a red accent wall. I don't think white world look good against the cream I chose. I'm starting to think im going to photograph the room and Photoshop the colors until it's just right lol.
  • Great idea on the Photoshop. There are probably lots of apps/websites that let you play around with the colors.

I concur with the OPs who said to go more neutral on the crib. IMO red is awesome as an accent color and perhaps for one key piece of furniture, like a glider, but it can easily be overdone. A nice wood color or stain fits with a nautical theme anyway (like the hull of a boat), perhaps more so than a red crib. I think without some wood tones in there, you risk making it look more like a patriotic theme than a nautical one.

Also totally agree about forgoing the red trim. I like bright white, too, and I honestly think that works great with cream walls. But if you definitely want a color trim, I'd do a mock-up first to be sure it's the look you want.

Love the theme! Post a pic when it's done. :)

  • @mcclan03‌ thank you, but my plan wasn't to paint the crib red. The crib is a dark cherry brown. My question was about the smaller pieces. The dresser, glider, and nightstand. I think I have decided to do the glider red with a blue cushion. And stain the dresser to match the crib.
Still not sure about the trim. That's where Photoshop well have to come in lol.

Oh, sorry. My reading comprehension skills are sad today. I love the red glider idea -- that will add such a pop. Good luck with the trim decision!
