Big kid mattresses

I stopped by the local furniture store at lunch time, and feel a bit overwhelmed by the number of choices for mattresses.  They had some that seemed kind of cheap at $149-199, nice ones in the $200-400 range, really nice ones in the $400-800 range, and high end ones that went up to $1,000+.  What have you ladies been getting/got (or maybe got for your older child)?

    I got the middle range for DS. He will have it for a long time and needs to be comfortable. All mattresses are not created equal.

    I don't want to be at either extreme - The cheap ones seemed very cheap and the expensive ones seemed very over the top.  So, really, I'm mostly looking at the middle ones.  There was one that seemed good at $350ish, though I'm wondering if we shouldn't spend a little more.  Then again, I know that she's likely to abuse it for a bit (I can see her being that kid that jumps on the bed) and she may eventually want one that's softer/firmer once she's old enough to have a preference -- I'd be much more okay replacing one that's $350 than one that's, say, $850.

    We got a queen for her, which is now in the guest room. It was a $1000+ mattress but I got it on major sale, so it was about half that. I want it to last as long as possible so I was willing to get a better mattress. We got lucky with the sale!

    She will still have her crib mattress when it converts to a toddler bed but maybe well get a mattress pad or something. We won't get a new mattress until we convert it to a full size bed.

    We were lucky enough to have a family member give us their toddler bed. Once he gets used to sleeping in that/out grows it, he will get my old mattress; which isn't really old. My parents bought it for me for Christmas 3 years ago before SO and I lived together, so I have a practically brand new full sized mattress waiting for him at my moms.

    But if I we did have to buy a new mattress I'd probably save some money so I could get one in the middle range. LO is a big boy, I don't need a cheap mattress flopping out on him. I'd rather spend a little extra then have to buy another.

    Our cribs go from crib to toddler to full size.  The crib mattress we bought was dual sided (one side softer for toddlers) but only one of our kids did the toddler bed.  The other one we went from crib to full size.  Anyways we bought a memory foam mattress with a box spring for on top.  Its the Denver Mattress brand (not sure if that's a regional brand or not) and I believe for the mattress & box spring it was a total of $250.  I think they say that the memory foams last only 5 years but I figure it will last much younger since when they started using it at 2-3 years old they weren't that big.  Plus I like the memory foam because they can't jump on the bed :)
