Trouble TTC

Testing question/HSG

I posted this is the check-in but thought I might get more answers with a new discussion so here goes!

I had RE consult on 6/16. I asked about taking provera to induce a period since it's been awhile without one (see sig). The RE said my lining didn't look too thick and that they could do the HSG without me having a period. I said okay, and after consult went on my way.

I scheduled SA for husband and HSG for the next week. When I took in SA the nurse said I can't do HSG because they need me to have a period. I explained that I had asked about that already and she said the other RE thinks that it is best to have a period first just to be sure I hadn't O'd. So now I am taking prometrium instead of Provera to have a period.

So, my question is would it be possible to do the HSG and take Femara in the same cycle? The RE said that they will probably start with femara since my DH SA came back with good results. I really thought that I'd get to do a medicated cycle in July and because of the miscommunication between doctors I am now like three weeks behind and possibly a whole cycle if I have to do HSG separately. Is that a stupid idea? I know I'm probably being impatient but I just want to O!

Re: Testing question/HSG

  • Sorry, I'm no help.  But they definitely scheduled my HSG after I had my period, just to make sure it was before I ovulated.

    Aug 2013 - SA: Counts & Motility = great, Morph = 1%; RE didn't seem too concerned

Mar. 28, 2014 - Laparoscopy; DX:  Tubes open.  Found some endometriosis and had that removed.

  • @athlete010688‌ @rainbowbridge14‌ Thanks! I do understand the reasoning behind doing it after a period I'm just really frustrated that I asked about Provera at my first appointment and they said it didn't matter. I feel like I went to an RE because I wanted someone who would monitor me properly and be on top of things better than my OB but I feel like I am still the one double-checking stuff, and bringing things up.

When I said that I was on CD 100 a couple of the nurses were like really?? and I was thinking, don't you deal with women who don't ovulate on a regular basis? Why does this sound so strange to you?

Sorry just venting and I don't know what to do!

  • Oh my. That's an awful situation. And frustrating!

I was under the impression too you had to be on your period for the HSG.

  • Sorry your so frustrated! Fertility troubles is a battle, having to also battle with the specialists and the nurses at the office sucks. When we first started our journey and scheduling appointments, etc. at our RE office I went with the flow and let the schedulers take care of my appointments. Within six weeks I realized I didn't like that I was seeing two different doctors depending on who was available when the scheduler put me on the calendar and I made the decision I would rather play the waiting game then go back and forth between the doctors. I chose the doctor that we like most and seemed to understand me best and the scheduler put a note that when setting up our appointments we only wanted to see that doctor. It's a huge commitment because everything has to be timed specifically and if he can't work us in (which he has been amazing at doing) then we may have to miss a month of TTC. On the plus side he knows my condition and situation and I trust him wholeheartedly. In a sense its picking your battles. Like you mentioned if there isn't excellent communication between the doctors then you may be put in a position where you miss a cycle due to miscommunication or a misunderstanding on something in your charts or that wasn't included in your charts; but if you are only working with one doctor you may miss an opportunity because your Doctor isn't available. It did take us a couple of cycles but we finally got everything into a solid rhythm and I am so much less stressed about our fertility treatments now that our one RE really seems to know me and is confident in the plan he has set up for us!

  • @DenaMaree‌ Thanks for the idea! My DH did say I should call and talk to the RE that originally said I could do it without the Provera and try to work more with him. I spoke with at least 3 nurses when I called last week and they just didn't seem like they knew what was going on. It's very hard when everything is so time-sensitive like it is with IF. Thanks again for your perspective!

  • The RE told me that I could do meds, HSG, and IUI in the same cycle if I wanted to get going earlier, but he recommended against it because he didn't want to necessarily have a month of meds if my tubes/ute might not be clear. But having the HSG is not dangerous for O or implantation.

  • I WAS supposed to do Clomid+HSG+IUI on my first cycle, but my team somehow "missed" scheduling the HGS and I didn't know any better.
When I was finally having my HSG, the doctor there told me that the contrast doesn't stick around very long, can't remember how long, but remember thinking to myself, oh good, it'll be gone before Oing.
Anecdotally, I have heard from several people that work in the field that they've seen gals get their BFP on their HSG cycle (those that have comparatively minor issues such as slight MFI or longer cycles but still O).

The thing that bummed me out about missing the HSG on my first cycle was having spent the $$ on meds/IUI and not even knowing if my tubes are open.  (they are, so whatever, but still, thanks every single person who read my chart and missed that important diagnostic procedure)

@LaurenNK‌ Thank you! And I'm sorry they messed up your chart! That's the only thing I'd be concerned about, I'd be spending money on meds without knowing if my tubes are open.

@NariaDreaming‌ Thank you! I think I will call tomorrow and try to get it sorted out. It would be so nice to at least have one try for July!

Thanks everyone for making me feel better and not crazy for thinking they should've figured a timeline out first!

Me too! It's going to be so much tougher to do all this if we have to continue during the school year. Good luck!

  • I can't speak to whether or not you should wait for a new cycle to do the HSG. However, I started my last Femara cycle on CD3 and did the HSG on CD8. I knew that if my tubes were blocked it could potentially be a waste of time and money, but I didn't mind as I felt it was worth a shot. Tubes were clear and missed our window for IUI as we were out of town so it was a BFN for us but I'm still glad we tried as now I know how I responded to the femara to hopefully get better results this cycle.
    Good luck!

@BunnyBerry‌ Thank you! Good luck to you too!

Thank you for your response! It's nice to know at least it would be possible and wouldn't harm anything. It's nice to know others have at least done it all in one cycle before. Thanks!
