I started all my kids with a little potty (it was the basic Safety First one). I like a little potty because its less intimidating and also I found that they preferred their legs on the ground when pooping. Plus I can easily put the potty in my car for when we travel- parks, etc. After about a few weeks-a month we transitioned to our toilet without issues in which we put an adult & child ring on (this is the one we have: https://www.amazon.com/Xpress-Trainer-One-Real-Training-Elongated/dp/B0012ADSN8/ref=pd_cp_ba_1). It was well worth it- my 4 year old DD has been trained for 3 years and still uses the child seat since she's so petite!!
We started with a potty seat. A stomach virus caused an aversion to the potty and we solved that by getting a little potty (something to be excited about). Our Pedi also claimed kids like to have their feet on the ground (or a step) to poop. We gradually transitioned back to the big potty (frankly, in part because I would rather not have to clean out a little potty) and have had no issues.
Our seat has an attached magnetic insert. It's made by Bemis and we got it at Lowe's/Home Depot (not sure which). Love it.

I've tried looking for this on Lowe's website, I'm not quite sure what it is though. Can you provide a link? @LC122
