Pregnant after a Loss

Amazing Kindness and Generosity

First, I'll give you all a little back story.  DH is a medically discharged Army Veteran who was part or the Ranger Regiment.  He works as a line technician for our cable company now.  I used to be the general manager of a local pub, but found out the bar had been sold, and was closing in two days on the same day that we got our BFP.  It took me a month to find a new job, but I got lucky, and found a position waiting tables at a locally owned breakfast diner.  I really wasn't expecting much, just easy hours and a little cash to help with the bills and baby things.  The girls I work with are amazing, and I have a few awesome new friends through my job.

At the diner, we have a little old man who is an Army Veteran who comes in twice a week.  He is super sweet and lonely.  He calls all of us girls his grand daughters, and we all help him out with little things like hooking up his new printer and making sure his lawn gets mowed every week.  He loves DH and I, and knows about all of our struggles staying pregnant.  He came in for breakfast on Wednesday, and I was his server.  When he was leaving, I gave him a hug, and he kissed me on the cheek and handed me an envelope and told me not to open it until I got off work.

When I got in my car to go home, I called DH and opened the envelope while we were on the phone together.  There was a note from "Grandpa" about how he is so excited to have a new great grandson on the way, and to use the money in the envelope for the things we need for him.  There was $550 in cash in the envelope.  I started sobbing, and DH was just laughing at me.  He told me that I better get to baking, because that deserves more than a thank you card.  I can't believe the generosity he's shown to our little family.  We already had most of the nursery put together, so I used some of the money to get Jericho's high chair, walker, a few little outfits, and the finishing touches for his room.  I am just in shock.  You see stories like this on FB from time to time, but I never actually thought it would happen to me.

How do we even thank him enough for this?

Re: Amazing Kindness and Generosity

  • That is amazing! What a touching story. It sounds like more than a grand thank you, he wants to be connected with you and your family. What about having him for dinner once or twice a month at your house? This story made my day!

I love this story, because the generosity goes both ways. You (and your co-workers) give of your time and affection to a lonely vet. Our elderly are so often invisible in this society. I bet that monthly breakfast and the honest attention you give when he comes in means more to him than you know. And then for him to surprise you with such a generous gift... It's really lovely. And how lucky Jericho is to have another person in his life to love him.
  • Great story. Thanks for sharing. So glad you have each other in your lives.

  • I haven't had a grandpa since I was a little girl, so he is more than welcome in our family.  I love him, and appreciate everything he's done for our family!
