Those with two or more kids already who breastfed

I am starting to get nervous about breast feeding DS2. DS1 nursed for about 9 months and in the early days... Nursed all the time! I am worried about th evening. Ds1 use to comfort nurse for hours on end for the first 4-6 weeks in the evening. This wouldn't be a big deal except for the fact that DH works late hours now and will not be home for bedtime to help out most nights. There is no hope in his schedule changing any time soon. If this baby is a huge nurser like ds1 was, I have no idea how I am going to handle dinner, baths, books and bedtime for DS1. Did any of you find that it was struggle to manage this in a reasonable amount of time? Or is there a good sling that DS2 can nurse in while I get things done? I hope I am worrying over nothing!

  • I'm also a military wife, and although this is only my second, my DS was a VERY high needs infant who really didn't sleep much when it came down to it. Babywearing is the only thing that saved my sanity and allowed me to get anything around the house done. I'm hopeful this next baby will be a better sleeper at least, but my plan is just to be flexible about things and with wearing the baby, we will all survive. I was pretty good at nursing in the ergo before, and hope to get the hang of "mobile nursing" sinner this go round. I too worry about being stuck to the couch with little help for the toddler, but I keep reminding myself we do to have to be stuck to a schedule, especially early on, I will encourage him to help as much as possible, and at the very least, it will be a good practice in patience for my first born ;)

  • I've done it, but my DD1 was several years older by the time DS came along. I also had the flexible bedtime routine. DS pretty much slept and nursed in a two to three hour cycle, 24/7.

But I'm terrible about schedules! We have routine, but no schedule.

  • I was in a similar situation with our first two and will be again this time. I had meals ready that I just needed to warm up. At bed time I sat at the end of my older daughter's twin bed and nursed my second daughter.  I never got the hang of nursing in a carrier, but I'll try again this time.

We do baths in the morning when my DH is available to help. My daughters have always gotten wound up by baths.

  • You can do it! The baby will sleep some of the time! I used to nurse baby #2 while reading to my 2 year old before bed. Baths were usually skipped on rough nights... No big deal in our house. Your older one will adjust and hopefully help out a little! Just go with the flow and trust your instincts. If baby fusses for a bit while you have to help your older one, it will be ok! You can nurse babe as long as s/he wants after you get older one to bed :)
