WWYD about early wake up

DS had been waking up at five and won't go back down the past three days. He used to wake at 4, eat and then back down until 7. Now he is waking at 5 and wont go back to sleep. His bed time is 6:30pm +\- 30 minutes.
If I don't go to him he cries loudly and it wakes up DH and DD. I also feel like he must be hungry as it has been six hours since his last meal. But I really don't want this to be the new normal.
Any ideas?

Re: WWYD about early wake up

  • I feel like I could've written this a week or two ago!  We tried just letting her fuss for a while instead of feeding, but it really did throw her day out of whack since she was up an hour earlier.  So, the next few days, we fed her and put her back down - treated it like a night feeding - and then got her up at the right time (6:30ish).  She stopped after about a week and went back to her normal sleeping schedule!

I do feed him but then he won't go back down. :(

  • =( wish I had advice, but you have all my sympathy!
  • Hmm same problem here. LO has been waking up at 5:30 instead of 6:30 the last few days & it's making me sad. :(. She won't go back down either, doesn't matter what I try, even bringing her into our bed makes no difference. I'm hoping it will be short-lived!
  • My LO has done this a number of times. I just kind of roll with it. I'll feed him and if he goes back to sleep then great. If he doesn't then I'll put him in his jumper and then I'll lay on the couch or go about my day. I was afraid it would be our new normal after 3 days in a row, but he eventually went back to waking up a little later. Hopefully wake ups go back to normal soon!

  • I'm doing a 5:30 feeding right now because I don't know what else to do with her newfound wake up time;). So we're in the same boat. Here's hoping it's short lived.

  • We started a slightly later bedtime routine and now she's back to waking up at 6:30.

  • I heard that early wakeups can come up when a baby is ready to give up a nap - for instance, around this age, a baby might be ready to go from three naps a day (morning, afternoon, evening catnap) to two naps (morning and afternoon only). That was definitely our experience a couple of months ago - my baby started waking up at 5 or 5:30 for a couple of weeks, then stopped as he consistently started napping three times a day instead of four. (That said, he also stopped sleeping through the night around the same time, so it could have just been what you suggested - stopped waking up early from hunger because he had gone back to eating during the night! But this was on the heels of a few weeks of sleeping through the night and waking up at 6-6:30, so who knows.)
  • Mine woke up this am at 5, I got out of bed to get ready for work and she rolled off the bed. I ended up putting her in the shower with me, then getting her dressed and making her a bottle. Hopefully she gets back in her routine tomorrow.
  • So baby woke today at 6. I can live with 6. DD wakes at 6:30 so we are an early house.

  • Finn often wakes up around 5. I usually bring him to bed with me and he goes right back to sleep for a couple hours, without eating.

  • LO always wakes about 5 5:30am but we start early here to beat the heat
  • DD usually wakes at 5-5:15. About 25% of the time she will go back down but not usually. DS usually wakes at 6:30 and we are all out the door at 7 so it works for us. Sleeping past 6:30am is sleeping in at this house...
