Cat feces

I stayed over my sisters house yesterday, she has no idea I'm pregnant. Well she has two cats and the litter box is in the bathroom, and one of her cats's always steps in his feces and than tracks the poop all over the bathroom. It was around midnight and I had to go to the bathroom well I stepped in the poop. I know that cats can carry a parasitic infection called toxoplasmosis. I washed my feet immediately and was planning on calling my doctor in the am. Do you think I should be concerned?

Re: Cat feces

  • I don't think you should be concerned, especially if they are indoor cats that don't consume raw food (which is the case 99.9% of the time).  You can check with your doctor to see if you already have an immunity to toxoplasmosis.  I read somewhere that 40% of people do.

  • I wouldn't be too concerned if it had been me. Grossed out, maybe, but not worried.
If it would help you feel better, definitely still call your doctor. Next time, maybe you can wear flip flops on your midnight potty trips.

Yeah they are indoor, and can't the doctor take a blood test to see if you were exposed?
  • I believe that was one of the things that was tested when they did my first round of blood work. My cats are indoors only and eat regular cat food... I will be cleaning litter boxes for as long as they are living.
~I give up. No siggie for me~
  • They can check your antibody titer for prior exposure but I think transmission is primarily hand to mouth, so you're probably fine. I assume they'll test you and keep an eye on you for symptoms (which wikipedia tells me are influenza-like: swollen glands, muscle aches) but try not to stress.

  • As long as you don't lick your feet you should be fine.
Love is like infinity: You can't have more or less infinity, and you can't compare two things to see if they're "equally infinite." Infinity just is, and that's the way I think love is, too.

Don't lick your feet.  It's transmitted fecal-oral so you're fine.

Also, the cat must actually be infected to shed the oocyte in feces.  Not all cats are.  Plus, if you've grown up around cats or have cats, you've likely already been exposed and have the antibodies.
