S/O To-do List

The list that @jalara48‌ posted below has me thinking: these are all important things to do, but how far in advance should we do them?

So here's my s/o question. WHEN do you plan to install the infant seat in your car? Pack your hospital bags? Finalize arrangements for older LOs? Take a hospital tour and/or pre-register? etc...

I really don't remember what we did when planning for DS' birth, but he was 3 weeks early...I suspect there was some scrambling going on.

Re: S/O To-do List

  • I'll be doing it all after 34/35ish weeks.  If I go earlier than that, well, stuff will just have to be done last minute.

  • I am doing my hospital tour in 2 weeks, at 27 weeks and preregistering after I see my new OB at 28 weeks. As far as packing my bag and installing the carseat, it'll probably be at around 38 weeks as long as appointments are going well and there are no concerns. If for whatever reason LO comes earlier than that, then yes, there will be some scrambling. However, I'll probably make a list of everything to take at around 36 weeks so if I forget something, DH can bring it to me.

Last time we did not install the car seat until after baby was born but because of the car seat check they have at the hospital, it wasn't a big deal. DH just took care of it before we left the hospital. I have already discussed arrangements with the people DS is going to but I'll probably finalize them at 36 weeks, although I do have a backup plan in place already if she comes earlier than that and have discussed it with the people involved.

  • I plan to have everything ready before 28 weeks. My OB is already speculating that he will be putting me on light duty if not bed rest at 28 weeks. And for some reason it's stuck in my head that the babies are coming at 34 weeks.

  • We didnt take the hospital tour last time because I ended up being there before we were supposed to go at 34 weeks. We remember the layout well enough that I dont think we'll do another. I forget exactly when it was but our doctor had us preregister around 30 weeks, Im guessing she'll do the same this time.

The carseat and bag will be packed and ready around 34 - 36 weeks. I think we'll make sure that SO's parents know whats happening with DD around then too.

  • I will do the hospital tour whenever we move and right after I'm able to get in with a new dr. So probably between 28-30 weeks. At that point I'll also be having to start trying to figure out what to do with ds since we won't really know anyone and I'm not sure if dh will be there. We'll probably pack the hospital bag and install the car seat base at like 35 or 36 weeks. Although last time I waited on my part of the hospital stuff till my water broke. Whoops.

  • -Classes and tour will be in September.
-I'll install the car seat base in my car as soon as it is received, so that is August. I'll leave the car seat in my car after 36 weeks (I work in a hospital).
-I'll pack a bag for baby and I after my shower in August. I should probably start making a list...
-My OB office is pestering me about pre registering, so that will be done by the end of July.
  • We had a planned induction due to my blood pressure, but we were given 3-4 weeks notice of it and had time to plan everything in advance, which included having my mom buy plane tickets to be there in time.

I'd like to have a hospital tour (we are at a different hospital than with DS1), in the next 6 weeks.  I'll likely have the bags packed and the car seat installed at 35 weeks.
    • At 29 weeks I have my third trimester cardiac work up which will determine whether or not I need a RCS - if we decide on a RCS some of the below may change.
    • I'm not in a rush to put in the car seat; that's something DH can easily do while I'm in the hospital if something happens early.  If nothing happens he will install them around 35 weeks.  Bag will be packed Labor Day weekend.
    • We will probably start parenting classes around 28 weeks, hospital tour is at 30, and I'm already pre-registered as everything I do is out of the hospital where I will be delivering.
    • Tomorrow is our 3rd (and final!) anatomy scan, and if all goes well we will probably register (haven't even done that yet) in the next 2 weeks, and will pay the balance on the nursery furniture (we ordered yesterday but put down the minimum deposit as I'm still paranoid) immediately post appointment.

  • I'll pack my hospital bag and get the carseat ready around 35 weeks, like we did the last couple times  I think my hospital wants you to register around 24 weeks, so I guess I should get on that.  We already have tentative plans on what to do with the kids when the time comes - last time our plan did not work out and DS ended up having to be at the hospital with us for a little while though.

  • I am going to have to wait until we move and I find a new OB to do any of the pre-registering/hospital stuff. The unfortunate part about out move is we won't know where we are going until 2 weeks prior so I can't even look for an OB or hospital yet. Hopefully we will be moved by mid August. At that point I plan to have my hospital bag packed by 32 weeks and my hospital tour ASAP after the move. I didn't put the car seat into the car until after DS1 arrived, but I plan to have it installed before going to the hospital for my c-section this time around.

  • Every item on Jalaras list just lead to another task that I haven't completed... Pack a hospital/baby bag? Sure, but I don't even have a bag to use yet. Install the car seat? Crap, we still need to order the car seat!

We just stared ordering the bigger stuff today, so hopefully I can check off some items soon!

  • I am going to sound like a slacker. And I'm ok with that. We probably won't pack a bag nor put the car seat in until sometime around 39 weeks. Last time, B was a day late- and though I know things could be totally different this time, I am just not really prepping until closer to then. Besides- 90% of the crap in my bag I never touched and my H could put a car seat in while we were at the hospital if needed. We have general plans for B- but some of that will depend on when new baby actually comes.

  • I'm having a RCS, so we will know when it will be. I will plan to put the carseat in the day before...DH can do it if we go early for some reason. Last time, I wanted to do it around 35 weeks, but DH pointed out that "what if we got in a car accident (god forbid)...then we would have to buy a new carseat". So we waited last time until 39 weeks (DS was born at 39+5). DS will go to my parents the morning of the RCS, and I will probably pack my bag at 37-38 weeks (bc I can't wait).

Many hospitals allow/encourage you to pre-register (i.e. fill out your admission paperwork) in advance of delivery, so that they have a ballpark idea of when to expect you and so that you don't have to sit there filling out your insurance info and medical history, etc., in between contractions. ;)

    Gotcha ! Thanks @Emerald27‌

  • @Lapooh‌ most hospitals have a registration to fill out so they can get you in their system and then it takes less time when you go in to deliver. Your dr office should have them or some are on the hospital's website. You can also call the hospital and ask for one.
  • I've already pre-registered at the hospital and we're doing a few classes offered through the hospital in the next 3 weeks. We'll probably set up the car seat and get the bag packed at about 35 weeks or so. I haven't planned much besides that. I've already gotten the baby clothes and things set up, but DH still needs to put together the crib.
  • I'm not putting the car seat in the car until my doc determines that my water will break soon. As for everything else, I'm probably going to shift into true mommy mode after my shower (late August/early September). I expect that I'll be antsy. That gives me something to tie myself up with until he's done cooking. :)

I start register for my shower next weekend IF I find a new apartment this week. *crossing fingers*

  • With my first baby I had EVERYTHING done before 30 weeks. This time around my goal is 35 weeks... I've been dragging my feet this entire pregnancy.
  • I plan to have everything ready by 34 weeks.  Everything was going completely, 100% normal with DS until I went in for my regular weekly check-up.  I was 37 weeks, 4 days, and my BP was high that day so that was the day he was born.  I didn't even have time to go home first.  It was a total shock, but I was thankful for being that crazy person who packs way in advance.

I'd like to have everything ready even earlier this time just in case.

  • I packed my bag, installed the car seat, washed baby clothes, froze a couple meals and put the trashbag between my sheets and mattress pad all between 37-39 weeks. FYI- It's also a really good idea to put a trashbag with a towel on top in your car as well, especially if you drive every day to work...

The other stuff like looking up nb photographers I'd done before 37 weeks, because sometimes they need to know in advance when you'll be booking a session.

Honestly as nice as baking cookies for the nurses is, it's something that was not on my radar at all. It's sweet, but it's not a priority for me

  • We have our childbirthing class (which includes tour) in mid Sept when I'm around 34 weeks so that'll probably be when I get everything else done, ie - preregister, pack bag, install car seat.
