Huge nasty veins on my leg

I know they are common in pregnancy (especially second pregnancies and especially with twins) but does anyone have any experience with them? I'm only 19 weeks and am nervous they will get worse. I have a small amount of numbness where they are. Called dr and they aren't at all concerned it's a clot or anything, so that's good.

The general advice I have gotten/found is to exercise to increase circulation and to try to elevate as much as is feasible and not stand for long periods of time. But I figure you guys are smart and someone here must have some words of wisdom.

SO what I am asking is do they keep getting worse? Any tricks besides exercise and elevating that worked for you? Thanks, ladies!

Re: Huge nasty veins on my leg

  • I don't have any tips or anything, just wanted to say that I'm getting them too. They are really high up on the back of my thighs near my butt -- I actually can't even see them, but DH noticed them the other night. I just read it's a common thing with pregnancy. Didn't even know it was more common with twins.

  • Are you talking about vericose veins? Get maternity compression hose (not Spanx or the kind sold at Target/Motherhood Maternity, but true compression hose) I have the Solidea brand. The graduated compression will help reduce strain on your veins, which is what leads to vericose veins.

I read about the compression hose but it seems pretty impractical in summer... I guess I will just have to live with them and hope they do go away after the babies get here. Thanks for the feedback!

  •  I've always gotten varicose veins on my right calf, but this pregnancy they started early and big, ugh. Midwife wrote a scrip for compression stockings, which I have yet to fill because I have to find a medical supply place. Hopefully this week.
Anyhow, I'm supposed to wear them at night and then later when fall comes I cam wear them all the time (It's too hot now). Unfortunately, they tend to be genetic (runs in my family) and you can get them surgically repaired, but not while pregnant.
  • Someone once told me crossing your legs can effect circulation and cause varicose veins. I don't know if it's true. :)
