High-Risk Pregnancy

Ulcerative Colitis

Hey there,

I'm 12 weeks pregnant with my first and have been also dealing with colitis. Wanted to reach out to see if anyone has UC? It has not been fun being pregnant but I am hoping it gets better. I was switched to a high- risk OB which has made me even more anxious but I'm confident I am in good hands!

Thanks!

Re: Ulcerative Colitis

  • Hi there!

I have UC!  I've had it for 10 years and started getting Remicade infusions last year after a bad flare that didn't get better with steroids.

I'm 20 weeks and have felt pretty good all along.  I still get my infusions every eight weeks up until 36 weeks.

My OB is extremely laid back and doesn't seem too worried.  In fact, he's more worried that I had fibroid surgery last April.

How are you doing so far?

  • Hi!

I am doing a little better. They increased the prednisone because that seems to keep the flare under control.  my GI dr wants to try Cimzia though because she does not want me on prednisone the whole pregnancy. I am going to look into remicade - I wonder if that could help. It's really annoying having the OB appnts and GI appnts! My work and sick time is suffering.

Thank you for responding! I was so lonely I was the Only UC sufferer. It is good to hear you are doing well. Sorry to hear you had to undergo surgery. Keep me posted on how you do in the rest of your pregnancy.

  • I also have Ulcerative Colitis (for about 10 years now) and am now 5 weeks pregnant.  With my first child, now 14 months old, my UC symptoms went away completely; I was able to stop my Asacol and straight through nursing and everything!  For some reason with this pregnancy it seems to be the opposite and I can't get in under control.  I have been eating bland foods and trying to deal with the pains and "runs" without additional medicine, at least until I'm into my 2nd trimester but it's becoming very difficult.  I was on Prednisone for 3 months for a flare up but my doctor doesn't want me to start on that again until after 12 weeks.  Good luck to you both!!  Hope we all are feeling better soonBig Smile
  • I was diagnosed with ulceritive colitis three years ago and I had a really bad flare I was unable to eat for six months and was hospitalized three times.  My doctor put me on remicated and I was doing great.  Until 5 weeks ago I started to feel symptoms of a flare.  I recently found out I'm five weeks pregnant, my flare is getting worse to the point where I can't keep anything down.  When I saw my GI doctor he said I can stay on remicated until my third trimester.  This is my first pregnancy and I'm really nervous what if the remicade isn't working anymore.  How is my baby supposed to get the nutrition it needs if I can't eat.  Has anyone else gone through this and ended up ok?  Is this normal for someone with UC and pregnant?  It is bad enough having a UC flare but pregnant and a UC flare is really scary.

I know this post is old but I am pg with my first at almost 7 weeks. I am in the severe category for uc. I was in between meds (getting ready to start the 6mp drugs) when I found out I was prego. I developed an allergy to my other meds (Ascol and all in the class, apriso ex.) I am already flaring (on ucerius) My Dr wont; start me on anything new. I am cramping every day and my frequency is up to 5x a day (very different from the women complaining about not being able to go!) Did everything turn out alright for y'all? I am getting to the point where I feel like I can't leave the house :( Please advise!

  • agt104, I also have UC and in a flare.  I'm 15 weeks tomorrow with identical twins.  I was on 6MP which worked liked a charm for me.  I gave it up a few months before we started trying due to risks of birth defects.  This put me back in a flare with tons of blood loss.  I'm currently on Apriso and Canasa, but they are not working.  My question for you is about Uceris.  My GI gave me Uceris to try, but told her I wanted to wait until the second trimester due to the lack of research.  That day has arrived.  How is Uceris working for you?  I appreciate your time.
