Restless sleep last couple hours?

My LO is 6 weeks old...after his second feeding he will have very restless sleep and will wake himself up by 630 if he stays in his crib. If I bring him in bed with me, he will sle until 8. Anybody else have the same issue? I don't want to create bad habits, but hoping as his first stretch goes longer he will be sleeping deeper for longer? Any ideas?

Re: Restless sleep last couple hours?

  • I've been having the exact same issue with DD's second night stretch. Up until 6-1/2 weeks she was a great sleeper on her own, then suddenly after her 4 am or 5am feeding she will only sleep an hour stretch (when she used to sleep an extra 3hrs). The only thing that seems to console her is to sleep next to me or while being held. I'm hoping it's just a phase and that with time she will be back to her old ways. In the meantime, I agree with PP, do what you gotta do to make your LO happy (and you).

Yup- going through the exact same thing!! I'm hoping it's a phase as well- it leads to very early ams!!
  • Same thing here too! DD will wake up for the second time between 6-7 and just make noises while half sleeping unless I bring her in bed with me.

  • Everything I've read about the so-called "4th trimester" says it is impossible to spoil a newborn or create bad habits this young. If he sleeps better, do it. ;)
  • We do the exact same thing as well. Hoping it changes soon!
  • We were having this problem too but as soon as she started giving me a nice long stretch in the beginning (she goes about 6 hours), her next stretch calmed down. She goes to bed between 630 and 730 and doesn't wake until around 1, then again 3 hours later and then 2-3 hours after that.

  • Yep I bring ds2 to bed with me after his 6am feeding or he won't sleep. This way he sleeps till about 8 when ds1 gets up. The rest of the night he is in the RNP next to me.

  • My LO will fall asleep swaddled in her RnP from 11p to maybe 3a (or 4a if I'm lucky). Then she will wake to nurse, which I do in bed, and fall asleep in bed with me until 7a or 8a.

I'm concerned about breaking the habit of her being in bed with me, but it's the only way to get her to sleep longer, plus I need the extra rest too!
  • Writing this having been mostly up since 3am with my LO. I think we had two half hour stretches of sleep since then. She's been increasingly fussy the last few days, but this is new.

Sounds familiar. He'll let me put him down in his crib after the first few feedings, but for the last overnight/early morning feedings, he ends up sleeping in my arms or on my chest. I can then later put him in his crib for the first long morning nap.

  • Yep. DS is down with the sun and up with the sun. At 530 it's a crap shoot as to when he sleeps. Most of the time I can get to 730. Some days it's 630 others I can get to 830. If he sleeps with us in bed we can get to 9. But I've stopped that habit.

I figure it's fine since he's got day and night pretty figured out. I just adjust his naps accordingly.
