Updated: Could teething cause this much damage?

C woke up with a fever Thursday. And he has 2 top teeth trying to come in so I figured that was the cause. I gave him Tylenol and teething tablets. The fever went away by Friday morning but he has been MISERABLE ever since. He cries and whines all day, just wants me to hold him- no one else.

His appetite is way down, so he's been getting more bottles than his usual 2 a day. He has been waking up in the motn screaming. I think his equilibrium must be off because he's been falling down a lot (there's a scratch and a bruise to prove it), he walks around like he's drunk. I'm calling the pedi first thing in the morning. He's never been under the weather this long.

Anyone have an experience like this?

Update: The Dr said since it's not the molars coming through, teething shouldn't be causing this much pain. He could not see his eardrums due to wax down there. He scraped some of it out, which was a nightmare. Then just ended up giving us a script for an ear infection. Hopefully this does the trick.

  • This is what happens to my kid.  It's horrible.  Not the clumsiness, though.  I did notice that with an ear infection, though.  Worth a call to the pedi to make sure it's not ears.  Probably teeth, maybe with a side of ears.

I haven't had this specific experience but I agree with getting his ears checked.  Fluid in the ear may be causing the equilibrium problems and he can definitely have an ear infection without fever.  Hope he feels better soon!
  • I say call the pedi too. I hope he feels better.

Thanks, ladies. His ears are my #1 concern. I want my healthy boy back.

This is us right now. A had a low grade fever for about two weeks. A week and a half ago I took her to the pedi and we were told that teething was causing a minor ear infection. Low and behold yesterday her molar finally cut through. She fell twice yesterday she has two bruises on her face one on one cheek bone and one on the other.

I feel like she has been falling a lot lately. It scares me a bit. We have a follow up on Wednesday and I want to double check and make sure all this falling has to do with the ear infection. She has never fallen this much before. She has bruises everywhere ; her face , her legs etc. Ugh.

  • Yeah it wouldn't hurt to call the pedi. Ugh I hate teething! Dd has all of her baby teeth, no joke lol. I realized this the other day, which would explain a month ago when she was just feeling horrible and I found she was getting her molars pretty much all at once. Ever since all her teeth have came in she hasn't woke up once and is totally different.

@ALP514, my little guy has never fallen this much either. That's what worries me.

@pnutg I heard it was "normal" but it still worries me, which is why I am going to bring it up first thing on Wednesday. I suggest calling the pedi and letting them know whats going on. I had called the first time and they told me not to worry because the fever wasnt high and I waited 2 days and called again cause I knew something wasn't right. Go with your gut.

We are on day 2 of the same thing. Doesn't look like DS' ears are bothering him so I assume it's teething.

  • LO was falling a lot when she had an ear infection. She's currently cutting tooth #4 right now. She is waking up a few times per night and cries easily. That part may be due to her increasing independence though lol.

  • I hope he feels better soon. Being a toddler Is hard enough without your ears hurting.

@pnutg We had our follow up today and our ear infection is gone but I did express my concern to the doctor about falling and she said that this is the age now where they are going to be falling the most. At 13 months there are a lot of babies who are still not walking so falling as much as they are is common.

In our case teething is causing swelling which is producing a little bit of clear liquid in A's ear. The pedi said that could have something to do with the low grade fevers and the falling but pretty much said it comes with the territory.

Hopefully your LO feels better soon!

@ALP514‌, that's strange that their balance would get worse as they age. My little guy's slowing getting better. I hope the same for your sweet girl.

I hope that the antibiotics work quickly and C is feeling better soon. Did they give him any numbing drops to help alleviate the pain?

@TundraGirl‌, nope, no drops. Just the antibiotic. It seems to be helping
