What would you do?

I go to a large ob practice with lots of drs. I will be having a RCS and I decided which dr I wanted to deliver. They don't have their hospital schedule yet and I have been seeing the nurse practitioner as she has more convenient appt times so I haven't talked to the dr since my first appt about my RCS. Well, I just talked to the dr and she is on vacation the week before I'm due which means the soonest she could deliver me is two days before my due date if that is one of her hospital days. I haven't gone into labor with my other two kids and had to be induced but I am afraid I will go into labor this time since I will have a scheduled CS (that's just my luck). What would you do? Would you schedule with another dr? Narrow down to two and see who can deliver when it gets closer? Would you stick with this dr and hope everything goes as scheduled?

Re: What would you do?

  • I think I would select a list of my top three doctors. That way you have more options and hopefully one of the three is on call or available to you.

As you know with pregnancy and children in general, its rare when everything goes as scheduled!

  • My practice is large and I'll have whoever is on call when I go in, and it really doesn't bother me.

I'd go more with the date you want than the person you want, especially if it's going to stress you out to wait. And then remember baby could totally mess up your plans either way.

  • I've never had my doctor deliver my babies, and I'll be lucky if he does this time around since the doctors work rotating shifts at the hospital, instead of on call. Because you're having an RCS, I would agree with PP's that you expand your list of doctors so you know who's doing the delivery when the time comes. It's important to feel comfortable with your birthing plan, but also to prepare yourself for the unexpected.

I go to a larger center as well. We love our OB but we have no clue If she'll be on call when we go into labor. I think there are 5 OB's total, so it could be any one of them. I'm hoping our OB will be the one, but I'm not going to stress if she's not.

  • I'm in a similar situation, the practice I go to has 13 doctors. Even though I've been using them for several years and through two pregnancies, there are some docs I haven't met yet.

I agree with @persephonerose‌, choose your top three. That's what I'm going to do as well. My OB office is gung ho about scheduling the RCS at pretty much exactly 39w. They try to accommodate doc choices, but with a small window of time it makes it difficult.

  • My problem is that I have to schedule with whatever dr I choose. They won't schedule based on a day and you get whatever dr (unless it's an emergency). I basically have to start seeing "my dr" who I will schedule the RCS with at my next appt. I could push it and see two but that's even a stretch and they prefer I don't. If I was having a vaginal birth this wouldn't be an issue at all and I wouldn't worry about it. And the hospital schedule won't be out for at least a couple of months so I can't base my decision off of that.

This seems strange to me.  I could understand this more if it was a vaginal birth, you take your chances with who you get when you go into labor. But for someone cutting me open I would want to know and see that person before hand.

It seems like you really have no options.  The doctor that you want, who is going on vacation, will she agree to letting you go past 39 weeks so you can schedule with her? (My OB wont for RCS) Honestly even that sounds like a crap shoot, because if she isn't schedule for a hospital day then you are screwed and will end up with whoever they have anyway.

  • I'd schedule her 2daysbefore appt and have a backup plan for early labor with the next best choice who IS available in that time frame.
