13 mo old mad about going to bed

Hey everyone! My girl is thirteen months. She always sleeps through the night, and if she does wake up, she yells out and puts herself back to sleep. My problem is that she cries EVERY TIME we put her down to sleep. We have a little routine which consists of two books in her chair, and 2-3 songs with the lights off. After that, we lay her down, rub her back, and leave. She screams when we leave. Two to five minutes after we leave she's fast asleep. Sometimes she is even asleep within 30 seconds, but still yells for those 30 seconds. On top of that, she cries as soon as nap or nighttime is over. It's strange because I know she's well fed and she gets a good amount of sleep. It just seems part of her routine. I hate it so much. Can anyone spot something that I may be doing wrong or have been through this? I'd love to fix this!!

Re: 13 mo old mad about going to bed

  • This sounds normal to me.  This 3rd baby of mine only does the wake up crying but the middle one would often cry at this age for a minute to 3/4 then quit and sleep.  Whatever.  I keep toys in the crib and they learn to play with them in the morning since I don't get them right away.

I have good sleepers, great in fact.  It's not perfect though.  Even with fantastic sleepers I currently have a 4 1/2 year old sitting in the living room in a booster seat cuzz she wasn't dealing with bed time, my 2 1/2 year old seems to be out which is great since the eldest isn't in the room, and the baby went down without a peep but will likely start crying for a bit at 6-6:30 which is earlier than the rest of the house.

It's all a cycle.  Your kid sounds pretty spot on normal to me.  You probably just need to keep doing what you're doing and know that in a month or two it'll be cool again.

  • Thank you so much! That's a relief to hear. It's just become part of her routine but she sleeps wonderfully! I just needed another mom to tell me that it's okay!!

My LO was sleep trained and now goes to bed at night without a peep. Naps are a different story. I have to rock him to sleep otherwise he won't nap period. But every time he wakes up in the morning or after naps, he cries. In the MOTN he can put himself back to sleep though. So for me DS' crying is normal. He's always been like this. If your LO cries just for a couple of minutes and is able to put herself back to sleep I wouldn't worry. I think it's pretty normal.
