Trying to Get Pregnant

First month TTC... when to stop using OPK?

Yes, I am temping. But I screwed up 3 days in a row (the memory function was...hard to figure out). So I only have 2 days of temps to rely on.

I'm turning a FMU and an afternoon 2 hour urine hold Wondfo as well as a CB. So we're having sex for the next couple of days I guess. Do I need to keep testing and looking for positive to see how long to keep having sex?

I don't anticipate it being this confusing going forward, but this month shocked the hell out of me. I just got my IUD out on Tuesday and turned an OPK on Friday.

  • I would keep testing until you get a negative. Then you can also see how long your surge is in comparison to when you actually O if you continue temping also. I'd also keep testing until you have your crosshairs on FF.

  • I seriously wonder if I'm going to get cross hairs this month. Only 2 days of temps and I have no idea what CD1 would have been. This is going to be a really nasty chart.

But thank you, I'll keep testing!

I have no experience with iuds but did you have any sort of period/withdrawal bleed after the IUd? The first day you need a pad or tampon would be CD1. 3 temps shouldn't be that big of a deal if it's still so early in your cycle. However, if you don't think you will see a shift I would do more OPKs just in case.

  • I got my Mirena out on May 6th, only had a little bit of spotting that day, then had withdrawal bleeding starting May 7th so that was CD1. As PPs said, I would keep using OPKs (but I'd stick with just one brand per cycle; I use Wondfos because they're kindest to my TTC supply budget). Once you confirm O through temping, then stop with the OPKs. Good luck!

What kind of IUD did you have?

If it was a Paragard, you can count first day of your last cycle as CD1 & I'm not surprised you're O'ing, since you definitely still ovulate with that IUD.

If Mirena, then yea-- there is no clear CD1 (unless you had a withdrawal bleed as a PP said), and you may or may not see a clear temp shift (like if you got a few 97.2 ish temps, then a few positive OPK's and then your temp jumps up to 97.8 and stays there, you could be fairly sure you O'd... but if things just look wonky it could be from the progesterone withdrawal from IUD removal)

If it were me I'd keep temping until a period or BFP, keep doing OPK's until they're negative again.
  • I did the Mirena. I had some bleeding, but it was old brown blood. I attributed this to irritation from removal. It lasted about 2-3 days and only needed a liner. If that was actual withdraw bleeding,I don't know how I could O this quickly.

  • Hmm, I tried to do some reading on TTC after mirena and it seems that people have very different experiences with what their first period is like. I guess I would just try to keep track of everything and keep temping and using OPKs. Sorry I don't have more advice, lots of TTC is just wait and see what happens.

I know absolutely nothing about IUDs, just wanted to add that I had several fade in/fade outs on OPKs this cycle (my first, off of BCP). I would think I O'd when my temp rose, stop OPKs, then temp would drop the next day and I would start OPKs again and see lines. If you've had a positive, there is a good chance you will O, but make sure you keep consistently temping to confirm so you don't miss sex on important days. If you don't think you can keep up with temping, definitely keep using OPKs!
I will keep testing! And temping actually. Just had a bit of a rough start with it!
