Babies: 6 - 9 Months

food and spices?

I asked the pedi if LO could eat anything with spices (like if i wanted her to nibble on some kind of meat bc who doesnt spice their meat lol) and she looked at me like i was crazy and told me she couldnt have any spices yet. For those of you doing BLW and baby eats what you eat - are yall eating plain food also?

My 8 month old eats spices but no salt and I don't pepper her food either. For example I put Italian seasonings on her zucchini and squash, cinnamon on apples, mrs. Dash in beans etc

Just watch the salt, but LO can have any foods you have. So if you're making chicken just make one breast with no salt but all other seasonings. Watch out for premade marinades and seasonings like Montreal Chicken Seasoning. Those all have tons of salt.

  • I give my LO foods with lots of flavor but I have been avoiding spicy food. When I was bf it seemed to upset his tummy so I figure it may upset it now. He is older now thingy so I don't know

Generally you're fine to introduce spices but keep an eye out for what you're introducing. I think the complex sauces can be the trickiest. My nephew has a serious cashew allergy that can pop up with some Indian & Asian sauces. Treat spices with the same regard you would introducing any other food.

DD1 has always been a great eater and has no problem with semi-spicy stuff (like trying to drink salsa). But as for bland food being boring - I'm not sure about the development of taste buds and whether kids actually experience foods the same as adults. I'd have to look up the science behind it. I'm generally in favor of safe exposure to a wide variety of foods.
  • This makes me feel much better! Thank you for all the responses. The pedi made me feel like it was a stupid question and i should already know better.
  • I buy the premade pouches and if you look at the ingredients, some have spices in it like cinnamon on apples and BNutSquash and mint in peas. I've tried it and its not bad! So go for it.
