Re: How often do you clean toys/ play items?

  • I think I'm pretty bad at washing toys. I just wash them when they seem dirty. Should I be washing them more? My LO is starting to get hives after play with/ in some toys and I have no idea why. My only guess is they're dirty?? Andplusalso, what do you ladies use to clean toys that's not too harsh? Soap and water?

I use a baby dish soap that I also use for bottles.

Are the toys breaking down? Good quality? The hives worry me

  • Have you mentioned the hives to your pedi? Because I'd be calling.

  • I haven't called. They disappear after like 20 mins. I'm trying to figure out what's causing them cuz some appeared on her face after I fed her where my arm was in contact with her face (ebf). And now they're gone. Nothing has changed: lotion, soap, detergent, still only breast milk. The pics are from after playing in a jumperoo thingy.

I agree with this.  Is there a chance a mosquito got in?

  • Does it happen every time? I agree with @Bookshelves‌' suggestions

  • I just started noticing it yesterday. I'm in the process of washing everything now. The hives haven't reappeared since this morning when she was in the jumper. Hopefully it's just the fabric.
  • If I thought my baby's toys may be so dirty they're giving her hives, I'd just clean them. Not make a poll.

    Yeah, kinda thinking this myself...
  • I was just wondering if I should be washing them more and how often everyone else washes their toys. I thought maybe I was slacking but it seems like the majority of moms just wash them when they seem dirty.
  • Also, I called the nurses line and she believed it could be contact dermatitis due to sweat or drool. I'm just keeping tabs when it happens to see if I can pin it down.

But my reaction still would have been to clean them if I thought maybe I should be cleaning more and THEN post a poll about cleaning frequency rather than posting a poll to find out if I could continue to avoid cleaning.

  • I washed like all of the things yesterday and today. Hopefully that'll make a difference. I'm going to have to make a habit of cleaning her toys more often. Maybe once a week or so. I think it's been helping.
  • OP: Did LO come in contact with any new people?  It might not be the toys.  Twice my LO had hives after new women held him.  I guessed hand lotion or laundry detergent, pedi guessed perfume.  Just another suggestion.

I was cleaning toys only when dirty.  After he had an infection in his throat and mouth I switched to every few days. I think this may be overkill, but it makes me feel better.

  • @Meghan14‌, the day before we did go over to a friends house. Do you think the hives would appear the next day? They haven't appeared again so maybe the washing/ cleaning helped?
  • For my LO hives appeared the day after and lasted 24-48 hours.  But as you know and F14 loves to  say "every baby's different."
