Oh look ... a question about EBF poop.

Since we all discuss poop now on a daily basis. I'm just going to shoot it straight here.

Anyone who EBF sees the odd string of mucus? DS has had the one string over the past few days. I didn't eliminate anything from my diet since he was born (except caffeine) and we have no milk imbalance issues. Proper colour, proper consistency. He's gaining weight beautifully and I see no other tummy troubles for him (except grunting when he needs to burp or poop).

Online its mixed reviews, can be normal, can be something. Curious to see if others have it the odd time or two.

PS - we must never tell our children the depth of their bowel movements in our discussions ;)

  • Yup, here. We sometimes get mucousy spit up too. It's fine from time to time. In our case, I think LO might have some congestion issues that contribute to it given some other symptoms, but it's generally nothing to worry about if it's occasional and there's no other sign of troubles.

  • Pedi said if there's no other symptoms (excessive fussiness, rash, gas, etc.), then mucous is normal because EBF babies are more effective at using the milk and excreting the excess in the form of mucous.

  • Brooke has it at times also... Always figured it was normal
  • Oh good! I figured it was, buts popped up over the past couple of days. Mind you though he has poo-plosions lately as he tends to go all at once in the AM, so I thought maybe because its so much!

He's grunty only when he needs to poop or burp. Then he's fine.

This is what our pedi said too.

  • Mine has the same. I thought I read somewhere something about dairy... I dunno. Clearly not a helpful answer except we have mucusy poo also and I haven't made changes since her weight gain is good and she seems happy and healthy. For the record ours is also frequently congested sounding.
  • Brooke also sounds congested we just did nose spray tonight...when I asked the dr she said infant congestion always sounds so much worse that it is because their tubes and sinuses etc are so small..she didnt seem concerned

My LO is congested at night as well and we've been using saline drops. Doctor said it's common, but also could be due to dry air/the air conditioning in our room.. ETA: She only seems to be congested before bed/during the night when she fusses.
@MK1013 Have you been finding the drops helpful? I want to give them a shot and see if they make a difference. I thought about a humidifier too but it's so hot and humid where we are during the summer, even with AC, that I'm not sure there'd be a need.

+1 for being hard! I'm very interested by this BC just this morning I called our pedi about 2 flecks of blood in LO's poop diaper last night, then normal poop diapers last night, then mucous stringy green poop diaper this morning. She said that the mucous was often a sign of cow milk or soy intolerance so advised me to eliminate those from my diet. I wonder now if that may be too early to do....
  • It's amazing how many food products contain milk or soy. And I love milk. I can leave the soy.

The mucous alone wouldn't necessarily suggest an intolerance but when there is blood, too, I'd be concerned.

This, mucous alone wouldn't make me eliminate, but blood is a sign of irritation within the intestinal tract. I'd eliminate at the first sign of blood. Just to be safe.

  • @MK1013‌ my guess is how watery it is. EBF poop can be contained. Diaherra kinda can't be.
  • :( I hope it passes quick.
