Twins + morning sickness

I apologize in advance if this has already been discussed I did a search for it and didn't find anything..

I was wondering how morning sickness and the severity of it connected with having twins, for all of you with that experience? I am currently 8w2d pregnant and I know I'm early on but I've noticed that my ms is A LOT stronger than what I would think is considered average.. My friends and family have noticed as well, that it's "more than normal", SO's sister (who has five kids) keeps telling me I must be having twins! Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I haven't had my first u/s yet (scheduled for July 3d) so I'm just running off assumptions and fumes! TIA

Re: Twins + morning sickness

  • I don't think twins would matter much when it comes to morning sickness. I could be wrong. I had wicked morning sickness my entire pregnancy with my daughter and it was an almost everyday thing the whole 9 months and she was a single delivery.
MS is different for each woman and each pregnancy.

  • Eh, every pregnancy is different. I had virtually no morning sickness with my son, and this pregnancy is knocking me on my ass with it, to the point where it's interfering with daily activities big time. And, FWIW, DS was a twin for almost 8 weeks, and I still didn't have any ms, so take that as you will.

  • While I agree it's definitely not always an indication.... I will say, I had no morning sickness with my son whatsoever, and this time I honestly wonder how the hell I am going to make it through. I'm sick when I'm hungry, when I'm hungry I can't eat, everything makes me gag.. Even water if it's not ice cold. It's been super tough and came on like a shit ton of bricks. I am only 6w4d but there are definitely 2 little beans in there sucking the life out of me!

  • @VixenHeart‌. my sister has 3 kids. She had more morning sickness with her singleton then she did with her second pregnancy with twins. I dont think they correlate

  • Every pregnancy is different. When my stepmom had twins she had no morning sickness. I dont think its related.

If you cant keep anything down talk to OB about getting zofran. I'm personally on the 24/7 nauseous hangover train. I domt throw up i just gag all day, with kid number 1 i puked several times a day but i was hardly ever nauseous.

If I could puke I would love it. It's the constant gagging, nausea, aversions and dry heaving that is killing me.

  • Plus, the Duchess of Cambridge had extreme morning sickness with Prince George, who was obviously a singleton, and this time a around everyone is saying she is pregnant with twins and not a peep about her morning sickness.

  • For me the nausea started a little before 7 wks and it was mainly in the morning and was easily cured by crackers. Yesterday was the first time I actually threw up and tomorrow I will be 9 wks, so for me the ms hasn't been that bad.

  • Sounds like you might have hyperemesis. It runs in my family and I will most likely have it as well. Hyperemesis, if you don't know, is severe MS to the point where you can't keep anything down. Even smelling food, or even thinking about food, is enough to make you vomit. Its very dangerous, and very harmful to mommy and baby if not properly treated. There are a few things that can be done to treat hyperemesis; hospitalization with a feeding tube down your nose, medication that has more harmful isde effects than good, or eating one or two cannabis edibles seems to help. If I develop hyperemesis, I will be doing to edibles as the benefits far outweigh the risks, even with the preferred medication for the condition. My OB and I are in agreement on that. However, having hyperemesis doesn't necessarily mean you're having twins. Like @HerHighness‌ said, every pregnancy is different, and every woman is different. Sadly, the only way to tell if you're having twins is to see two sacs and two heartbeats on an u/s. If you think your MS is more severe than it should be, I would call your doctor or MW, and see what they say. GL! :-h

  • I wouldn't jump to that conclusion yet! From the American Pregnancy Association:

Distinguishing between morning sickness and hyperemesis gravidarum:

    Morning Sickness: Hyperemesis Gravidarum:
Nausea sometimes accompanied by vomiting Nausea accompanied by severe vomiting
Nausea that subsides at 12 weeks or soon after Nausea that does not subside
Vomiting that does not cause severe dehydration Vomiting that causes severe dehydration
Vomiting that allows you to keep some food down Vomiting that does not allow you to keep any food down

I'm pretty sure cannibis is not the ONLY way to treat HG. It's not even an option for most women. If the choice is between becoming severely dehydrated and taking medicine, go with the meds you and your doctor have discussed are safe.

  • Talk to your Dr. about you MS.  Mine gave me a Rx of Zofran, he also gave me OTC options which were Emetrol and Unisom with Doxylamine.  I would talk to your Dr. and see if any of those are an option.

But as far as twins an MS, I have heard it can be worse but I don't feel like mine is any worse than it would be with a singleton.

  • It just irritates me when people assume that pot is safe during pregnancy. Why in the world would you avoid a drop of alcohol, never eat deli meat, forgo sushi, not take medicine given to you by your doctor for morning sickness, but assume cannibis is safe during pregnancy? Why, because it is "herbal?" Pregnant women are told to avoid chamomile, for crying out loud! In the studies conducted about marijuana use during pregnancy, it has been linked to lower birth weights and growth restrictions and a higher incidence of NICU admissions. It is currently being studied about the side effects of cannibis in utero and emotional development for the first ten years fo life. Nothing is risk free. Pot is not risk free.

I may be overreacting here because of a recent conversation with by BFF. If so, I apologize.

I never said smoking it was a good idea, nor am I suggesting its safe, but from all the research I've done, the benefits of edibles, just one or two, outweigh the risks the medication to treat hyperemesis presents. Some women will do just fine with OTC stuff, but people like my mother and aunt didn't, and I just want to be prepapred. I don't expect anyone to share my views on this, its just my personal opinion and choice IF I ever develop a severe case Hyperemesis. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
