I am having so much trouble trying to figure out a name for this baby. I think naming DD was, while still difficult, easier than naming this boy.

Leo Dominic and Eli Luciano were our top two for awhile but now SO doesn't like Eli Luciano and I'm not sure about Leo Dominic. We're thinking we might just use Dominic as the first name and think of a different middle name. Problem is I cant think of a middle name to go with Dominic and I fear it might sound funny with Giana.

I lurked the baby names board and another poster had the same problem with middle names but I didn't like any of the suggestions. They were too English sounding, SO is big on having the kids names sound or be italian and I agree with him for the most part because his last name would sound strange with a non-italian name.

My one hang up about not using a middle name is that it might sound funny later. The kids last names are hyphenated as SO and I aren't married but we plan to be in the future - sidenote: he 'proposed' the other night after he got home from a friend's birthday. Needless to say he was drunk and I'm not entirely sure that counts.

No fear, I have a suggestion for a middle name!

Don't use a middle at all. No one really uses their middle name.

Scrap Dominic altogether because it sounds funny in a sibset with Giana.

I don't think Dominic and Giana sound strange together at all. Dominic has latin roots, and I would argue is somewhat Italian sounding.  If you want a real Italian name, what about Giovani, Massimo, Domenico, Luca, Marco, Matteo, Lorenzo, Francesco, Stefano?  Names that are actually popular in Italy...

I would be more focused on having an Italian sounding first name rather than middle name considering the fact that IRL middle name is used relatively infrequently.

I like Leo Dominic but if you're unsure about Leo I wouldn't make it his first name. Does your DH not like your other name at all? Because I think Dominic Eli sounds nice.

  • My very Italian friend is named Dominic Valentine :) I also like Dominic Elias, instead of the shortened Eli.

  • I actually really like Leo Dominic. I say keep it in the running!
  • Going to add that we want to try and stay away from names that have already been used in his family so... not Matteo, Michele, Franco/Francesco, Giovanni, Vito, Vincenzo, Antonio, Luca (unfortunately because I love this name) and Gabriele. A lot of them have already been used two or more times too.
