March 2015 Moms

exercise

Hello fellow M15s! I was wondering if some of you were going to workout during your pregnancy? I had been going to a hop hop aerobics class, but I'm afraid all that bouncing isn't good during the first tro. PgAL brain is likely to blame. What are you thinking about doing? I'm going to try yoga or pilates and continue to walk/jog.

Re: exercise

It's perfectly fine to exercise during first tri unless your ob/midwife puts you on pelvic or bed rest. If it worries you though, stick to things like yoga and walking.

ETA I said first tri because you were talking about first tri, but obviously according to your comfort level and doctor's orders, exercise throughout pregnancy is fine.

  • I do a 30 minute walk during lunch at work each day, just to make sure I at least do something 5 days/week. Well, sometimes fewer days if I end up working through lunch or have a lunch meeting.

I also play tennis 3 days/week for an hour or so each time, but I'm thinking of taking it easier on that. My doctor says it's fine, but I'm not totally convinced.
  • @spaceykatie‌ I used to play tennis! I'm sure mine will say the same about aerobics, but...

  • I walk, am a regular at my barre studio and play golf. Barre is very bump friendly (easy to modify) but I did stop going to the Cardio Barre because I was new at it, and it's non-stop jumping. I was always a sweaty overheated mess after that class!

  • I did spinning and yoga 3x a week during 1st tri, and part of 2nd. Then switched over to yoga.

This time around I will start yoga, and make time to go to the gym on the weekends (even if it's just to jog).

  • I ride my bike to work (2mi each way), some light cardio and do lots a walking. I am thinking of adding in yoga.

  • I swim a couple times a week with a masters group. I've taken the last week off and hope to go back when my energy levels are back up a bit.
  • I will continue walking--I had planned to start a better exercise routine when ttc but never got around to it other than my daily walk.  I'm too nervous now to start anything more strenuous but maybe I will if I make it to 2nd tri.
  • I'm walking, jogging & starting yoga. The rule if thumb (typically) is you can continue with most exercises (unless it's crossfit or something high impact), just not adding something new & strenuous.

  • @TikTak‌ yes! I had awful sciatic pain with my first. I would like to do Pilates as well.

So it sounds like we're on the same page. I can't wait to try yoga and Pilates!

  • I usually do Zumba and yoga and plan to keep doing both as long as I can. Jumping a lot in Zumba seems iffy to me so I'm just doing little jumps instead of full out jumps.
  • With DS I was too sick for anything but yoga. I was hoping to run as long as possible this time & do yoga, but right now I'm waiting a bit longer (after spotting). Then I will try a short run & see how it goes.

  • I have been really awful about exercise lately, so I'm just going to try to walk consistently.  I may try a prenatal yoga class down the line because I like yoga and it may be a good way to meet other moms.
  • Walking with DH and some very light (5 lb) weight lifting. I also want to find a yoga class in the area.

Last time I kept exercising as normal and then started eliminating exercises when I physically couldn't do them anymore (which wasn't until like 7 months). I'm going to do the same this time. I'm also going to make sure I do Pilates consistently this time, bc that ended up being the only thing that fixed my sciatica at the end of the last pregnancy, and if I could prevent it this time, I would love to!

Pilates helped your sciatica? Good lord, mine was bad last time. I might have to give this a try.

  • Yoga and I'm going to try stick to outside stuff at least through the fall. Hiking, swimming, possibly biking (are we allowed to ride bikes? I always forget that one).  Being outside improves my frame of mind and we have long cold winters up here, so I want to take advantage of the good weather while it's here.

@ambethsco Ha! I thought about the biking thing today. DH and I had been going on rides together prior to my positive. I told him I wanted to keep biking, and then I realized I've never seen a pregnant woman on a bike and looked it up. I think the main issue is falling once your baby bump is no longer protected by your pelvis. Also, because your body is changing, your balance may be thrown way off, causing more chances for accidents. So I may bike for a bit until my belly is really starting to poke out, and then lay off.

I CrossFit and do yoga. And I plan to continue. There is nothing wrong with CrossFitting during pregnancy if you did it prior to being pg. I try to go at 70% instead of 90% in my workouts. No new weights or PRs.
I CrossFit too! I plan to continue lifting my current weights. No handstand work or PRs for me either but I see no reason for quitting. It makes me feel both physically and mentally strong.

  • I'm a runner so I'm going to continue doing that as long as I can.  A little upper body weights here and there as well.
