Avent bottle question

I've read some reviews of avent bottles that say the baby pretty much drowns in milk with these bottles.  Well...we're having this issue, and I'm hoping maybe simply changing the nipple will help.  Our bottles came with the 2 nipple - slow flow, but I'm thinking of trying the 1 nipple - newborn to see if that helps.  Anyone do this and can speak to if it helped or not?  FWIW DS is breastfed.

Re: Avent bottle question

  • I use the Avent classic and natural bottles and never had this problem. However, we have the 1,2 and 3 nipples. For DS the 1 is too slow (currently using the 2) so this may help your LO. Good luck!

  • I use the natural with the size 1 nipple, no problems here.

I recommend using the Lev 1 nipple for this age, esp if they're BF'd! Ive heard its better for BF'd babies to have a slower flow in general.

We use Avent classic, and DS is using the level 2 now, bc he was crushing the lev 1 all the time. I never would have started him on the lev 2.

  • Sometimes even the #1 nipple is too fast for DD and the milk goes everywhere. I can't imagine her trying to manage a 2. I don't think we'l move up to a 2 ever- but she swaps back and forth between boob and bottle.

If I were feeding formula which has you gradually move up to 6-8oz at a feeding- I'd want a faster nipple just so the feeding didn't take an hour every time. Feeding her 4oz with the 1 is very slow- but I'd rather it be slow and have her get it all down slowly than faster and have her dribble it all out onto her bib.

  • DD is almost 7weeks and we use the Avent Natural with a 1. She chuggs it down like there is no tomorrow but we haven't noticed anymore of a milk drowning than the other bottles we have tried. DH actually prefers the Avent to Dr. Browns and Medela.

We'll try a 1 and see how it goes! It makes me wonder why these came with a 2 nipple now. Hmmm.

  • Are you using the Classic or Natural bottles? We have been using the Natural with size 1 nipples a few times a week for DS who is 5 weeks without any problems. I will point out that I noticed a lot of leaking the very first time, but I then realized that I didn't have the nipple completely in the correct spot! (I had pushed the nipple up through the plastic ring and it LOOKED correct, but I still had to wiggle the nipple to bring the lip of the nipple up over the ring so the nipple & ring were flush where they met.) Sorry if I didn't explain that well, but just wanted to share in case you were having the same leaking issue that I was! :)

We're using the natural bottles. I'll have to be sure that the nipple is through correctly.

We use both the classic and the naturals with DS. I'd say a first he had a hard time keeping up with the flow, but it just took him a little time to get used to a bottle vs the boob. Once he did its been no problem, and now he's up to the flow 2 nipples.
