AAP is now strongly endorsing doing so, as a survey showed that only a disappointing 60% of children were read to on a daily basis. How do we compare?

There are no SS here.

  • Not every day but every other day.

I did all the time when he was little and would sit still and not shut my fingers in the book, try to chew the cardboard off, etc. Now, I try to read him at least one book everyday, but it doesn't always work out that way.
  • I put no because he either 1. Eats the book or 2. Won't sit still. Ds1 didn't start enjoying his books until he was closer to 1 1/2 years of age. I read to ds1 every day, multiple times a day.

  • Yes. At least one a day. He will bring them to me and sit. Then he tries to close it and eat it.

  • I did when he was a newborn, but not anymore. He is so squirmy and either wants nothing to do with it or he'll grab the book and try to throw it. I should really start trying again, though. I really want to be able to read to him.

  • I don't read books aloud to her everyday. But she "reads" books everyday to herself. She loves taking books off her shelf and looking at te pictures and turning the pages. I need to be better at reading to her but honestly she doesn't like to sit still for the lenthg of a book all the time
  • For those of you with squirmy lo's, have you tried more interactive books? My little guy loves any book that has flaps he can lift or fun things to touch. He's not as good at listening to the plain story books unless it's one of a small group of favorites.

  • Ugh, poor second child syndrome. We read 20 books a day from the start with G and we still read him at least 2 at bedtime. Now with poor Lo I feel like I never have a chance to focus on a book for him and he will just crawl off if I try to read to both of them. But in truth G was making full sentence demands by 16 months. (I need water. Cold water. With ice mommy.) and I can deal with that type of bossiness taking longer to develop this time around!

  • It ebbs and flows. Right now she just wants to eat the book and screams if i wont give it to her.I've started reading to her at dinner time because she eats so slow and can't try to take the book.

DD does this with her board books. She'd rather "read" them herself than let me do it.

  • Depends on what time we get in, eat dinner and whether KJ is sleepy. Most nights yes.

  • Every night before bed. Daycare picked up some slack every now and then.

  • @CL8badB - nope!!!  Either you do or you don't with this one.

And as a result, I'm really impressed with how well our board follows the national average on this one!

  • Yep. Several times a day. It used to be only part of our bedtime routine, but now she wants me to read to her all the time.

Not every day. Maybe every other day or so. Depends on what she feels like doing. Sometimes she'll be in the mood to sit and listen but even then she flips to the end halfway through and just wants to eat the book and other days she doesnt want anything to do with books. She will "read" by herself though.

ETA: We also read out things like labels and signs to her, mostly just to explain what they are but the other day she loved listening to the ingredients on the cheerios box. Weirdo.

  • Probably at least once a day. It used to be part of bedtime routine but it doesn't always happen then anymore. As soon as I open the book she shuts it and wants to run away! So we try and she sees books and gets used to them and heard words, which is what is what matters now. I don't think it matters if you get through the whole book or not. Just keep it part of their everyday experience.

  • Yes, but during the day and rarely before bed. She gets too excited and they get her all riled up.
