Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Baby hates food

So...my little one is 6 1/2 months and hates food.  My oldest loved food and pretty much grabbed every bite of puree we put in his mouth.  From about 5 months on, DS has been acting ready for food but because of a family history of allergies we waited until he was 6 months (6/8).  Since then we have tried feeding him solids at least once a day and he hates it.  He screws up his face, gags, shivers, and turns away.  He will eat puffs and cheerios, tonight I gave him small soft chunks of carrot and he ate those (while I was holding him) but he hates purees.  I know baby led weaning is a popular trend right now, but he won't feed himself anything so that's not a solution.  Anyone else had this problem?  Suggestions?

Re: Baby hates food

  • Eh, put the stuff on his tray and leave it.  He'll probably play with it but at some point he'll stick something in his mouth.  This food isn't meant to fill him or provide any major source of nutrition so just let him get used to touching and grabbing and he'll get it :)

What purees have you tried? Its possible he's gagging on the spoon, not the food, so maybe try feeding the purees with your finger. Also try warming them up a little. I also agree with PP, just put some soft foods on a tray and let him play. He'll stick his fingers in his mouth eventually.

My DS went through a phase not long after we started solids where he wanted nothing to do with them. It lasted for a couple weeks then he started begging for our food again, and since then he'll have off days but is now eating solids 3x a day along with his normal amount of formula.

  • My daughter hates the spoon and any baby food. She mostly plays with her food. I she only wants the good I eat so I give her little pieces of that.
  • My LO started with BLW at 6 mo but had a really slow start and didn't seem to like anything. Now he is 8 mo and shoving everything in his mouth! He has really gotten good at eating.
  • My LO hates fruit,  have you tried to switch the flavors up a bit?
