How many words does your baby (aka toddler) use?

edited June 2014 in April 2013 Moms
Rhys still only uses mama and dada. I swear my kid is behind on absolutely everything. How many words does your child use regularly? (I am counting a word as a sound that is similar to the actual word and that your child uses consistently and with meaning to refer to the object that it names.)

I said 10-15. Addi says: mama, dada' papa, bubba (our dog) nana (banana) milk, more, up, cheese, no, hi, bye bye, ball, wawa/agua

Eta: nigh nigh, book, uh oh

She has also started saying "oh yeah!" And "oh no!"

  • None.  He has his own language and we hear a lot of weird sounds / "words" repeated, but no meaning to any of them that we're aware of.  He says mamamamaama and dadadadada but 90% of the time seems like he's just babbling.  He'll be 15 months tomorrow.

Z says mama, dada or daddy, uh-oh, nose, nana (banana), more, nigh-nigh (night night), ball, bye bye. I don't know if this counts but we named her baby doll (who she's attached to) Zaria and she calls her ya-ya.

ETA: she's also learning her numbers and can count from 1-5

  • Miles says a lot of words. Headband, water bottle (wat bot), backpack and hungry (hunna) are the current standouts. He's also copying my infection on phrases...he says 'I know!' the same way I do, though he doesn't use it in context.

  • @Jdubb13‌ it really is! We have a doll who has a headband, and he likes to take it off and put it back on. The little girl next door always wears one, too, so I guess that's where he picked up the word.

Alice says Momma, Dada, Ben (brother), wawa (water), hi, nigh nigh, ball (favorite word by far), pat pat (when she pets the dog), read, pup pup (which is up up), dog, no no and I think that's all of them. Forgot she also says baby.

Carter was saying a lot of words, but has regressed to only saying a couple and taking non stop in his own language. Currently he only says mama, dada, up, more and his all time favorite is no.

This is us too, he was saying: Mama, Dada, Wally (dog, sounds like olly), Maggie (dog), Uh Oh, Hi, Yea.  But now, nothing, maybe a Dada when i point to the dog and ask 'who's that?'.

Where's my SS?  We get "mama" and "Eyut" (Elliott, her brother).

Take that, DAD.  (My son didn't say mama until waaaay after dada.  I may have been bitter.)

  • I need SS too because we still don't consistently have "mama" or "dada." Sonya has said "dada" a few times and "mama" once, but I don't think she actually knows who or what those words represent yet (if I ask her "where's Daddy?" she will point at anything except her dad).
But she does say "hi" (ai) and "uh oh" (oh oh). And lots and lots of things in what might be a new linguistic hybrid between Mandarin and Polish that I am incapable of understanding. She can point and shake her head "no," so I'm not concerned--yet.

  • I can't believe I forgot SS! Epic poll fail.

I voted just mama and dada, but she also says "that" when pointing to things. She signs bird, dog, more, please, eat, and milk.

I forgot that she also shakes her head no and waves goodbye.

  • Amanda, my DS seems to be very much like Rhys, except he doesn't say mama or dada. He says "car" and "Tika" (the dog) and will echo me when I tell Tika "Good girl!" That's it. Everything else is unintelligible babble. Oh, and he still wants to hold my hands when walking 85% of the time.

  • DD is a chatterbox! And these are ones that are consistent and have meaning. I say it counts as a word even if she is using a particular sound for something consistently (like r-r for lion).

Mama, Dada, up, uh-oh, hi, buh-bye, nigh-nigh, na-nuh (banana), eat, more, all done, ball, r-r (lion), hoo-hoo (monkey), Mo-mo (Elmo or Nemo, our goldfish), Me-Me (Minnie - her Minnie Mouse stuffed animal), ducka (duck).

And my two favorites: look it! and ella-ella (for Cinderella).

As of a couple days ago, she's trying to say her daycare teachers names too. It's funny to hear her try and imitate me. I don't count these yet as they're a work in progress (Maria and Emily).

  • My little stinker still won't say mom/mommy/mama consistently! But he does say daddy, no, soos (shoes), uh oh, cat, key (kitty). The best is when he says car, because he leaves off the "r" sound so he sounds like a Bostonian "cah"! Haha! He also signs milk and more.

  • Mamama (only when whining at me), uh-oh (every rare once in a while) and as of today, bye-bye
"As soon as I saw you I knew an adventure was going to happen." ~Winnie the Pooh
  • Cortana says Dada, Mama, Nana (Grandma), Ca (for cat), wha da (what's that? and she points at the same time), and "tickle tickle tickle" while opening and closing her hands, lol.

She uses a lot more gestures though, like shaking her head no, or she makes a certain laugh for yes. She waves hi and bye, and for goodnight she opens and closes both hands. We have our own made-up sign language here, lol.
  • My LO repeats words but he doesn't use them regularly. I said about 6 words: mama, dada, Charli (his sister), bye, hi, and I love you. Oh I forgot uh oh so 7.

We're in the 3-5 range. He says Dada, Mama (usually only when tired) da, which actually means that (like what's that?)  and my favourite...yes! It comes out sounding like a cross between yet and des, and he says it for everything! Who needs to know "more" when you can just say "yes" when mommy asks if you want more? ;)

  • Mama, dada and hot are pretty much her main three words. She also has said hi, by and no a few times as well as ut, but she forgets the oh after it, and du - like she's halfway to duck but she doesn't finish. Oh and she's also working on cat....pretty close on that.

  • As of right after I posted that he doesn't have words, turns out he has "hi" and "uh oh" when he drops something, as opposed to just randomly saying it, and "that" when pointing! His "hi" sounds more like "eye" so I didn't get it for a while!
