opinions on baby monitor

I'm a FTM and was pretty content with choosing the Motorola brand baby monitor as it was on most top rated lists.  However, MIL's boss told her about the Angelcare monitor with the movement pad and she insisted that I get that one.  I've read the reviews that this one gives off too many false alarms and I'm just not interested in dealing with that, and neither will DH at 2 in the morning.  BIL and SIL are paying for it and told me price doesn't matter but I'd hate to make them pay so much money for something I may stop using.  Any opinions on these? Any other brands that worked better?  Thanks

Re: opinions on baby monitor

  • They are actually two different things all together.  The Angelcare monitor is a movement monitor to make sure your child is still breathing and the motorola brand monitor is a video monitor so you can see that child.  If you get the Motorola you don't need to have the Angelcare but if you get the Angelcare you will probably also want a video monitor.

  • I have a Motorola video monitor that I still use with DS, I like it and have had not problems with it. When he was an infant I used a Snuza movement monitor on him, it's a little device you clip to the diaper and it detects movement and breathing. We only had one false alarm, and it was because I must not have secured it right one night.

I got the Snuza and a separate baby monitor because I had read all the complaints of false alarms from the Angelcare monitor. I was happy with my choice and the Snuza is way more portable and baby does not need to be laying flat, so if you use a Rock n Play they can still be monitored.

  • I'd go with the Motorola.

  • FWIW all I've heard is how unnecessary the Angelcare is because it's all false alarms and doesn't actually reduce the risk of SIDS.

We survived 18 months with an audio only monitor and only bought a video monitor once DD started to try and climb out of her crib. A movement monitor is overkill, IMO.

Eta: we have the Motorola video monitor and so far it's been good. The TV and wireless internet can cause some sound interference when in use which can be annoying. I actually prefer our Phillips audio monitor.

  • DH bought a home security camera that we'll be using as a baby monitor. It streams right to our cell phones and is encrypted so no one can hack in

NICU staff last time told us not to get a movement monitor - they said there are a lot of false alarms and it'll drive us nuts.

We used a simple sound monitor til we were ready to sleep train, then we got a cheap video monitor.  worked great!

  • We have a video monitor and a snuza. I never used the snuza with DS because of all the false alarms. I love our video monitor and actually just upgraded to a dual screen option one for baby 2.

  • I have also heard of them setting off false alarms.  We had a basic audio montitor, that we never used as our house was so small.  Now that we are thinking about putting DS in a toddler bed, I bought a video monitor and I LOVE it.  Its nice seeing whether or not to go into DS's room when he is whining.

  • We only used an audio monitor with our first, but honestly, that thing creeped me out. Plus, our first monitor we had went out of range and beeped all the time, and we don't even have a big house. I may look into getting a video monitor this time around. Maybe.

  • Like @brittneyandadam‌ we got a security camera type thing that we can watch from our cell phones or tablet. My brother and SIL are also giving us their audio monitor that they don't use anymore. I honestly don't know the brand. I just want it because I felt that the audio on the camera wasn't great, and I would just like the peace of mind of having both. What we will actually use/like remains to be seen.
I'm considering getting a cheap audio monitor as well to use on vacation, at the grandparents' houses, and if I don't like DH's security camera lol

  • Thanks ladies. I'm going to go with my original plan and skip on the movement monitor because I think it's a bit much. Motorola has audio and visual so I think that'll be good enough. Thanks for your opinion.

  • We have the Motorola one and like it a lot. We could see her moving/ breathing and we were comfortable with just that.

  • I LOVE our Motorola video monitor.  The monitor recently broke and they sent me a brand new replacement free of charge.  Extremely happy with their customer service.

I used an Angel Care monitor with DS1, but didn't use it at all with DS2.  I didn't have the video monitor with DS1.  I doubt I'll use the Angel Care monitor with DS3.
