NT Scan/Other options

At the end of my second appointment yesterday the nurse gave me info on a blood test that checks for abnormalities like Down Syndrome. It's done between 15-20 weeks... I was kind of confused though since I thought the usual screening for this is an U/S... So I said, "Is this the same thing as the NT Scan, and she said she wasn't sure what I was talking about. Is this a usual other option? Or should I ask my doctor about the U/S option before?
