IUD users come in

I have my 6 week PP appt next Thursday and I am thinking about getting an IUD but I have some questions that I feel like only women who have/had them can answer and not my male OB:

What do you like about an IUD? What do you NOT like?

How is bleeding/AF with it?

Did it hurt to have it inserted?

TIA for any insight you have!

Re: IUD users come in

  • I had mirena and was happy with it.
I liked the freedom and it was low maintenance. I was crampy for a few days after insertion and bled a bit, but not bad. I never had AF while on it. I don't know about insertion bc mine was placed during surgery.
I'm debating getting it placed again.

  • Ive only recently got it put in. I have mirena and so far I love not having to take any birth control pills. I don't think it was painful just uncomfortable. It's just weird having someone probe around your vagina after delivery.

I had a paragard inserted after my last one. I liked that it was non hormonal IAnd no work on my part. nsertion was uncomfortable but not horrible. I had bleeding and cramping for a few days afterward. Periods were pretty normal. I did have a problem though with it - my body pushed it out twice, but I've been told that it's really rare for that to happen one let alone twice.

  • Just had one placed on Monday so all I can account for is the insertion. It was uncomfortable not painful, it also helped my midwife talked me all the steps as she went. Quick procedure. Light bleeding for a day after but none since.
  • Thanks for the input so far ladies - I thought of another question also....can you ever "feel" it? I'm assuming you're NOT supposed to, but I wonder if you ever can, especially during sex.

After I first had mine inserted I could feel it during sex / DH could feel it, but that was because the strings were too long.  I let my OB know and they cut them shorter.  I think this is common, and after the strings were cut it wasn't noticeable at all.  (Until in my case it came out on its own, which again, is really uncommon!)

  • I have a Mirena. I love not having to bother with any pills, etc for the next 5 years, and I love not having periods. I like that it's one of the most effective forms of birth control & not having pregnancy scares. The only thing I don't like is the insertion, but that's over in a minute.

I haven't had much spotting with mine, and when I get a period it's basically brown discharge for a day or two. Nothing a panty liner can't handle.

I can't feel mine at all. I've had 2 CS, so my insertion did hurt, but it was a pretty quick procedure.
  • My midwife said the strings soften and migrate up so they can't be felt after about 6 weeks.

IUDs are so personal. No two women have the same experience. It really all depends on the body.

I had Paragard after DS was born. I loved that it was hormone free and that I didn't have to think about birth control as long as it was in, but I hated everything else about it. For some reason it just wasn't compatible with my body.

AF was a nightmare for me on Paragard. Intensely painful cramps, extremely heavy bleeding (worse than postpartum) for up to 10 days at a time, random midcycle pain, etc. It was truly awful.

However, I know several women who absolutely loved their Paragard and had no issues at all. One friend even said she had less cramping and lighter periods.

Even though I hated Paragard, I still like the idea of an IUD better than any other BC method. I'm getting Mirena next Monday. Fingers crossed that it works out better for me.

ETA: Having Paragard inserted was no more uncomfortable to me than a pap smear. I had 4 weeks of fairly heavy adjustment bleeding from it, but no insertion pain or cramping from the placement itself. Also my OB has patients take Cytotec orally the night before IUD placement.

I got the paragard a few years ago when we still thought we never wanted kids.  I had been using hormonal BC for 20 years and wanted a break from it.  At the time, I was thinking it would be a good solution to take me into menopause.  Funny how things change... :)  Anyway,

What do you like about an IUD?  I liked that it was a non-hormonal solution and that I didn't have to remember to take a pill daily.   What do you NOT like?  I thought I could feel it poking me internally for a few months afterwards.  It didn't hurt, but felt uncomfortable.   My acne got worse when I went off the pill.

    How is bleeding/AF with it?
Much heavier than while on BC pills.  (again, I was using the non-hormonal IUD).  Cramps were worse as well.

Did it hurt to have it inserted?   A bit, but nothing too bad.  I was pretty crampy the first several days after insertion.

  • I am getting my IUD in a week or two, after insurance approval and delivery. I have not used one before but my best friend has used Mirena for a long time... back when it was really new. She loves it - no missing BC pills, lighter or no periods, and easy for spontaneity. :) We don't plan on having any more kids after this one, but don't want to get my tubes tied in case things change. Mirena it is!

  • I just got back from having Mirena placed and it hurt like a mofo. Holy crap. Paragard was NBD but this one hurt more than anything I had done to me in the hospital. Maybe bc I'm only 5.5w PP this time and I was just over 7 when I got Paragard? And I wasn't breastfeeding the first time. I dunno but OUCH.

Loved everything about my Mirena the first time (Haven't gotten it yet this time).  Seriously not a thing I didn't dislike.

     How is bleeding/AF with it?
99% nonexistent. Once I wasn't BFing anymore, I had like half a day of minor spotting each month.  Before that, nada.

Did it hurt to have it inserted?
    Not even a little bit.

  • Thanks again for all your input ladies. If I get an IUD, I am leaning towards the non-hormonal kind b/c I am already on hormonal meds for acne. I guess we'll see how Thursday goes and my conversation with my OB.
