VBAC?

Since We're going "there" with a bunch of other posts, might as well start this one while we're at it. Who's had one, Who's hoping for one?

I'm a candidate assuming this baby doesn't go breech like DD, and since I progressed to 6cm in all of 40 minutes last time (although in pre-term labor), I am hoping this one will move just as quickly since my OB requires a med-free VBAC. She did however say, I can always ask for a c-section at any point if I feel it's necessary. Would love to hear other experiences!

I had a successful VBAC with DD.  My c-section with DS2 was because I had been in labor for 24 hours and pushed for 3 with no progress whatsoever. My score was pretty high for my chance at being successful so I got the go ahead from my dr.  I was pretty confident since DS1 was vaginal.

  • Im hoping for one but I saw my OB yesterday and she didnt have a score or tell me Im a good candidate. She just said we'll do all the measurements at 36 weeks to be sure the baby isnt too big.

I had DD c-sec due to breech

kismetjess - why a med-free vbac?  should I ask my OB about this??

I'm not a candidate... but if I was (were? grammar skills not working), I would totally go VBAC.

  • animalcrckr -  can you tell me more about your VBAC?  when did you deliver?  did you have meds?  when you say score, what test did you take?
  • I'm going to try but my first csection was because of DDs size (over 9 lbs). She was stuck in he birth canal and couldn't descend, so we'll see what doctor says this time. Two more weeks until my first appt (ugh).

I think every doctor, or hospital has their own rules about it. I think it has to do with feeling if something is "wrong". But honestly, I haven't asked the reason why yet. I would ask, just to see what your OBs policy is, or if they even have one.

  • I'm going to do my best to have a vbac! I'm going to a midwife at a birth center, no more hospitals for this mama! @ksherwood‌ I would seriously consider looking for an ob or midwife that is more vbac supportive. "Big baby" is an unnecessary reason for a repeat cs unless he or she will be over 11 lbs at birth, according to the ACOG. 36 weeks is way too late in my opinion to start planning a birth, especially when you're already up against a little more obstacle with a vbac.

My previous ob, like many in America was paranoid about law suits and keen on surgery (perhaps for the money). But the reality is that the maternal mortality rate is 3 times higher for repeat cs than vbac. I would only do it if absolutely necessary!

I had vaginal the first time, emergency c section the second time due to placental hemorrhage, they thought my previa resolved (not so much). Honestly, I think I preferred the c section due to the major tearing, stitches, burning with urination, stitches coming loose, and getting restitched two weeks post partum (ouch!) I healed much better with the c section, and felt great by the time I went home. Just my two cents...

  • I'm hoping for one! With DD, I was induced (no medical reason, Dr. just didn't want me going past my due date...I know). That Dr. was also against VBACS, but since then due to insurance issues, I've had to switch Dr.'s. And this one is pro-VBAC :) So at my next appt, we'll discuss whether I'm a good candidate or not.

I'm excited! I didn't have a bad experience with my CS and I won't be devastated if I can't. I just would like to try if I can.

  • I'm not a candidate, which I was crushed over when I found out. I am currently torn between scheduling my RCS so my OB is guaranteed to perform it (I love love love her and wouldn't want anyone else all up in my business), or going in to labor on my own and taking my chances that it will be while she is on call, or her business hours.

  • I am trying not to think about it, but I do worry sometimes. I would theoretically love to do a vbac, and we switched from my scalpel-happy OB to a midwife group with an 85% vbac success rate for that reason. I do worry a lot about the actual logistics of it, though. We don't have a lot of close friends in the area that could watch DD at a minute's notice, so that is tough. I also worry about complications. I know that there are some scary C-section statistics, but we live in a great area with amazing hospitals, so I feel like those nationwide statistics are more doom and gloom than what happens in my actual hospital. Obviously there are risks either way, it just seems like C-sections have more doctor-controlled risks than nature-controlled risks.

So, I don't know. I almost pray it's taken out of my hands with a fast labor or a breech baby :-/  My first C-section was horrific, and I've thought about talking to a counselor about the whole thing because I still cry whenever I talk about it.

This is my worry. My friend who delivered vaginally 5 weeks before I had my CS was still having issues when I had mine and I was healed and good to go within 2 weeks! I really had no issues with my CS. I just (think) I would like to have the experience.

  • @jmcgra06‌ I had a pretty horrific cs experience too :( so I'm hoping that this birth is healing for me emotionally. One of the reasons I'm at a birth center with midwives is that they have the time and they care about working through all that with me. I fully support you wanting to talk to someone about it because it's a much bigger deal than just "mom and baby made it out alive." Some people won't get that.
  • My first was a vaginal birth, second was a c-section due to DD being breech, and my third was a VBAC (non-medicated).  My incision opened up after my c-section and it had to be packed every day for almost two months - lots of fun.  My doctor just assumed the other day that I will go for another VBAC, and she was right! :)

I had the same situation. I have considered VBAC but then I wonder why if csection was easier recovery for me. I have to do a lot more reading.

Love hearing everything you ladies are saying regarding this subject.
  • I had been hoping for a VBAC with my second, but needed a c/s at 36 weeks. So, now this will be my 4th (and most likely last) c/s.

  • I'm hoping for a VBAC too. I had a c/s last time because my Baby A was IUGR, Baby B was estimated 2 pounds larger, and their placentas had fused. I had to have them early due to the IUGR and growth discordance. It was the recommendation of my MFM and OB that a c/s would be safer for the babies, given the situation.
This time, I'm having a singleton so I'm hoping that I will have a successful VBAC. I'm going to the go-to VBAC OB and getting a doula to try to tilt the scales in my favor.
